Yuck! Keep your old office., 2008-04-12
As with the the 2007 PC version of Office, Office:Mac 2008 is in many ways a step backward - especially in productivity. While there are a few new useful features, you will find that many of the basic commands you routinely used have been made more difficult to find. While one could argue that I just need time to adjust to the new version - frankly, no, I don't. I routinely find myself loosing time while looking for commands I use all of the time.

The new Office is also not friendly to screen space. The new ribbon-like button feature at the top takes up much of my screen space so that I can see very little of what I am writing at once while providing a bunch of buttons I will likely never use. Not only does this ribbon seem to be permanent, if you want to add your old button toolbars, you lose even more writing space. If you do not add your button toolbars, you are forced to use the menus or the "toolbox". This, again, makes very poor use of screen space and overall efficiency.

It is truly sad that Microsoft has been allowed to squash all competitors in the Word Processor business. The recent Windows and Mac iterations of Office clearly show what happens in an industry when there is poor competition. Perhaps this leaves the door open again to new competiton - certainly, Apple's "Pages" has not attempted to fill that gap as this app seems only to appeal to those who want to send out those annoying family newsletters at Christmas time. Even more sad? The really annoying ribbon I referred to above seems to be MS's attempt to compete with Pages!

Two more quick cons. The program takes the better part of a minute to load on my G5 Mac, while the old version took only seconds. Also, this version includes 3 lisences. I have the software installed on two computers in my home. If one computer has Office open, then the other computer will not run Office. So, either I did something wrong, or there is really only one true lisence.

    Works just fine, 2008-04-11
I only switched to Mac from PC some 4-5 months ago and have only used the MS Office 2008, not the 2004 and can therefore not make any comparison.

I can, however, say that I think the MS Office 2008 is working fine, fast, and smoothly. I have not had any problems with installation or compatibility of any kind. 95 percent of the time, I work only with Word, so I'm not too familiar with any glitches or problems there might be with inter-MS applications compatibility. There is, however, a problem with Word. It is, obviously, set up in a certain way as default, and I can't figure out how to change this default. For example: every time you press 'return' (or 'enter'), it skips a line, thus creating a new section. I don't want it to do that be default, but I can't figure out how to change it. I may be thick here, but it's still annoying.

Apart from such small foibles though, it is all dandy. I use MS Office every day.

    Works as it should, 2008-04-10
If you use Word in a Windows environment, then you need this for your Mac. All the programs work as you would expect.

And you can install it on up to 3 Macs, so it's a great deal. I've installed it on my MacBook Air and IMac and it works great.

    Finally!, 2008-04-09
Long overdue upgrade. Works seamlessly with the Windows version. This is a true word processor unlike Pages.

    Works well with Leopard, 2008-04-08
I gave this 4 out of 5 stars because this product wreaked havoc on my macbookpro with osx 10.5 initially. I was one of the first people to buy according to amazon and MS hadn't issued any cirtical updates yet because I guess they wanted to see what was happening with individual users. Since I installed the last few updates I have had no issues whatsoever. I don't use entourage but for PP, Word and Excel there is little discernible difference with me in appearance or functionality and I have had no issues when working with files from a native windows environment. Overall product works well now but honestly, you might as just buy vmware fusion and keep your windows version and you won't have to buy this. Fusion works quite well and all my MS apps are working flawlessly on my mac too!
