EXCELLENT, 2008-09-30 I was mesmerized by what i know was a factual account of the founding of this country with John Adams as a main instrument in forming the birth and growth of this country, although he and all the founding fathers have turned in their grave many times as this country is not being run nor has it in many years as John Adams and the other founding fathers intended it to be run...They founded this country by the people, for the people and with the people's welfare first not they're own agenda as many Presidents since have....This program was educational as it was interesting and i could not wait until the next part was shown....This rates 5 stars twice over....
A Moving Rendition of an Excellent Book, 2008-09-29 Almost all of my Amazon reviews are book reviews (including McCullough's "John Adams"), but I was so moved by this HBO miniseries that I had to recommend it. The acting is superb, the score is wonderful and the story is moving. While the book certainly stands on its own as a monumental work of research and writing, this miniseries beautifully highlights the ups and downs of John Adams's life and the birth of our nation. John Adams is a true American hero and this series captures that so well.
THIS history is awesome!, 2008-09-29 I am so impressed with this series....didn't know "history" would make such an impact....and when the statement "we must declare our independence" was made, the remainder was even more impressive....Everyone should see this again, and again...
jadamsminiseries review, 2008-09-28 I am enjoying this miniseries very much. I am and have been a fan of John and Abigail for many years. I have several books about both of them. So to sit and watch the events unfold on the CD is a real treat. I think the acting is great. I am comparing the miniseries to the McCullough book to see how closely it follows the book. So far so good.
Wish there were a children's version, 2008-09-28 I just finished watching the seven episodes back-to-back.
The story of John Adams and his contemporaries is something young people in the U.S. need to understand. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this for children and young people because of the graphic nature of the tar/feather scene, the amputation scene, and the surgery scene. I understand that graphic scenes are something adults are supposed to tolerate (although I don't tolerate them well), but it's wrong to expect children to handle those scenes, even if they see graphic violence in movies and games.
Was it necessary to show the saw hacking through the limb? And was it necessary to show the breast surgery in graphic detail? For that matter, was it necessary to show John and Abigail celebrating their reunion with a quick nooner? It felt gratuitous, like because it's an HBO movie they had to be sure to include enough blood and toss in some spontaneous sex, but unfortunately these scenes make the movie unacceptable for the audience that would most benefit from understanding John and Abigail.
Well done series for adults, great acting (although Thomas Jefferson was wooden), powerful score, but I learned more from the book, and enjoyed the ride every word of the way.
