 Really cost effective backup, 2008-07-26
After over 40 years in IT and wanting to insure I had weekly backups of my home computer I had to find another resource than Backup Exec when Microsoft put out SP3 for XP. This is it, Fast, Easy to Use, Full or File Backup and Restore, plus some other really good utilities like "shredder". Would recommend, great value for cost.

This product is easy to use. You can set it to automatically back up whatever files you choose and almost forget about it.

 Disappointing; I wasted a lot of time..., 2008-07-25
Product kept crashing in the middle of the "Backup Wizard."Also product would not recognize my external hard drive (which is properly installed and recognized by all other programs I use it in conjunction with and which at 1T should be pretty hard to miss...) I tried to uninstall and reinstall the program 5-6 times, plus I also downloaded an updated copy off of the Acronis website to make sure that I had the latest Vista-compatible version. I also tried to opt out of the wizard and do a step-by-step install instead. I got a couple of steps further in the process, but was never able to finish the setup. BTW I have used Norton Ghost in the past and was mostly happy with it, other than I found it to be be rather slow. I thought that I would give this product a try, since it had received generally favorable ratings, but I will probably go back to Ghost. The Acronis "support" (such as it is), was of little use as I was unable to find pertinent info in their "Help" data base.

Acronis works for me; others didn't, 2008-07-24
I have had major, and continuing, problems with Vista. I experience anywhere from 1 to 5 crashes per week. Back in May I ordered Acronis 11 but, after reading all the 1-star reviews, I got cold feet and returned it to Amazon unopened (you have to LOVE Amazon's customer-friendly return policy!).
In the meantime I have tried TeraByte (I bought and paid for this one which didn't work for me) and 4 other programs. They all failed universally.
Finally, out of desperation, I re-read the online reviews and once again reasoned that Acronis 11 was the best thing to try. I downloaded a 15 day trial and have had EXCELLENT results with it. My computer crashed this morning and I was able to boot from the Acronis 11 Boot Disk that I made previously and then restore just the Boot files from my latest Incremental backup. I was back up and running perfectly in about 5 minutes. This same caper has taken me hours, and occasionally days, in the past.
I have re-ordered Acronis 11 from Amazon and will shortly register the software so I can use it continuously.
If you are looking for backup software, I have a few recommendations:
1. DONT BUY ANYTHING AT THE BEGINNING! This whole backup/restore thing is so complicated that you have to determine what works for you individually.
2. Start downloading free trials (I think you should start with Acronis 11). Don't even consider software that doesn't offer a free trial.
3. If you try something that doesn't work, don't rant and write 1-star reviews. Just calmly conclude, "well, that one didn't work for me".
4. Keep trying free downloads until you find something that works for you and then buy that one.
I will be anxiously recovering from the buggy-Vista crashes with the help of Acronis 11 and hoping nothing happens to make it stop working for me and my computer.
Thanks to you, Amazon & Acronis. No thanks to you, Microsoft.
