Had potential but missing the addictive factor of its predecessors, 2007-03-11
I played both of this game's predecessors and in this case 3rd time is definately not the charm.

For starters it takes forever to advance to new technologies and you often fall asleep just trying to wait it out. I know that it takes place between 1453-1789 but hey lets speed things up here now. I recall the
other EU games to be a bit more fast moving due to the addictive factor.

Despite exceeding most of the hardware requirements the music playback is choppy on my PC and it gets more annoying the longer you play.

I hope if they come out with EU4 that they will go back to basics and make the game addictive again. Then EU will be the game it was meant to be.

    'What Ifs' abound, 2007-02-25
The old saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Obviously computer game producers have never heard of this. Hot on the heels of the anti-climactical, heavily flawed Caesar IV comes EU3. The first two EUs, like the first three Caesars, were fun, addictive, light hearted and light on your computer. Then someone thinks a complete overhaul is necessary, and we get a product that not only is excessivly baroque in its design and execution but swallows computer memory like an SUV swallows gasoline.

Almost immediately after the release of EU3 comes the patch (an "as is" patch, as claimed by the Mods at the offical forum) - NEVER a good sign. Apparently this is to allay an extreme flaw in the game processor - the game won't load on many computers, mine for one, even though the computer may meet or exceed the needed requirements, because it doesn't recognize the computer as having the necessary amount of memory - only 128MB of video memory. I say "only" because few quality games nowadays eat less.

What about the game needed to be changed? Nothing, in this reviewer's opinion. Not only is the game fundamentally flawed technicall but visually it is ugly. The lovely map of the world in the first two EUs have been replaced with gaudily colored, faux "old time"-looking in the "style" of pre-18th century maps. Not necessary. I won't continue much further into aspects of the game itself because, in this reviewer's opinion, if they can't get the game to even load right in the beginning, what's more to discuss?

It wasn't broke. Why'd they try to fix it?

    Addictive! Beware!, 2007-02-07
I have had the game less than a week and have already spent WAY too much time playing. It's great! The AI is very good. Lots of decision making in the form of alliances, builing up your country, manpower, diplomancy, war, merchants and more. Yet, you don't get bogged down "micromanaging" everything. Planning for the long term is necessary and acheiving "victory" is what you make of it. Just surviving for 300 years could be considered a great victory for the likes of Barvaria or Serbia. You have control to make and create history.
The game has been visually redesigned as well. It looks great. It's not World of Warcraft, but compared to EU2 it's leaps ahead of it. An upgrade is already available (for free) from the publishers on thier website. The game comes on one CD and is quick to load. A great game for lovers of history and gaming.
