Not a Complete Image Backup Like Windows XP's Own Built-In Backup Utility!, 2008-11-03 I had a computer go down a few months ago. The computer was making clicking sounds on occasion. I had just installed Carbonite a few weeks earlier. Sure enough, I needed to restore the computer. Much to my disappointment, Carbonite DID NOT COMPLETELY BACKUP THE COMPUTER. It only backs up key system files/folders such as Documents and Settings, Favorites, and Desktop. MY hard drive is 120GB. Carbonite backed up about 20GB in total on its own and said it was done. It turns out that other files must be manually selected by right-clicking on them to be backed up. What a time consuming chore that can be. Why can't Carbonite automatically backup ALL FILES on the drive?
Another annoyance is the sound of the floppy drive as Carbonite attempts to access it. It often happens when web pages are accessed or programs are started or closed. I asked Carbonite customer support and they said they were aware of others having this issue. They said it would go away after the initial backup was completed. They were wrong!
Luckily, I had used Windows XP's own built in backup program called Backup Utility. It can be accessed by clicking 'start', 'run', then type in 'ntbackup'. It will copy EVERYTHING on a drive just like Ghost would if you want it to and also restore the registry to it's previous system state if selected. You would want to have a separate external hard drive to keep the backup files on. Not the C drive. Your backup drive should be equal to or larger than the drive being backed up. Once windows has been reinstalled, go back into 'start', 'run', type 'ntbackup' and select 'restore' It will simply ask for the location of the backup files. This utility is on of the best things Bill Gates has done for Windows. A definite stroke of genius and a good gesture. Plus it's free. I understand Vista has a backup program too.
So now the only advantage of Carbonite is off-site backup in case of theft, fire, flood, etc. Remember it's not an exact mirror backup of your computer. Otherwise, save yourself $50 a year for the subscription!
Carbonite is a RESOURCE HOG!! They also will not give refunds if you are not satisfied..., 2008-10-20 Carbonite is very resource intensive. It completely locks up our workstations when it is backing up (which happens all day long). It is advertised as a product that is suitable for small business use, but clearly it is not.
I purchased 20 licenses with the intention of rolling it out to all of our users, and everyone was so angry with me for installing it on their workstation, that I ended up removing it from everyone's workstation entirely. (We run Dell Workstations that we purchased about a year and a half ago).
I tried contacting Carbonite tech support via phone....after several hours of being on hold, I gave up. I even tried different days of the week and I never got through.
Their online help suggested that I change a setting that sets Carbonite's Internet usage to a lower priority, but that did not make a difference. They also suggested running a CHKDSK but that did not solve the problem of the Carbonite application being a resource HOG!
What's worse....I tried to get refunded for the licenses that we did not use and Carbonite refused to offer a refund for the unused licenses. Unbelievable.
Carbonite is no good if it will not read all of my drives, 2008-10-15 My hard drive is partitioned into two drives and carbonite will only read one. I called the toll free # and they said I had to talk to tech line. The tech line required a subscription. So I went online to chat with a tech. He said to reload the program which did no good. They have seriously wasted my time. It may be the best in the world for a standard set up, but they have no interest in customer service. I recommend this to no one with a partitioned hard drive.
No customer service, 2008-09-12 AFter the 3rd day, I noticed the program was constantly accessing my floppy "a" drive (I guess looking for something to back up). I never use the "a" drive and emailed customer service asking how to resolve this. They never responded.
About 3 weeks later, it got so annoying, I emailed them and asked to cancel the account. I got an auto response saying they are have so many new people signing up, they can't respond to my request for at least 3 days.
They also make it difficult to deactivate you credit card on line. I'll probably call the credit card company to be sure I don't get billed again.
I previously used Quicken (1 GB backup) and it was perfect. I wanted more space and went with Carbonite. I'll now go back to Quicken.
Sorry the option of zero stars isn't available, 2008-09-06 Pray you never have to actually restore your data because it is impossible. I've been on hold for a total of 6 hours in 3 separate phone calls. When I finally got through, they had no clue how to help me. While on hold for my 6 precious hours, I listened to a recording that informed me I could pay for some kind of special customer support for $20. Are you kidding me?? Pay for customer support when I've already paid for the service??! I can't believe they even have the nerve. I am not computer programmer, but I'm no idiot either. I consider myself pretty computer savvy. This software is a wonderful idea and easy to setup, but if you ever have to restore your data (which is the point of it right?), good luck. If I ever get my data back, I will joyfully uninstall Carbonite and find another software that works.
