Parallels Desktop for Mac and the matter of viruses, 2007-04-07 Parallels Desktop for Mac (Intel Mac)Parallels Desktop works beautifully on my iMac Core Duo. I had to buy it because a database I have is no longer made for Mac, only for PCs, and I didn't want to reboot each time I went between the Mac OS and Windows. The question then is whether one also needs to buy antivirus software. My understanding is that, since virus risk is low with a Mac, so long as one uses a browser only on the Mac side (not with Windows operating), it is possible to avoid the hassle of antivirus software. There might be some debate about this, but it seems easy enough to browse the Internet only with the Mac OS.

What's so difficult?, 2007-04-04 Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand what's so difficult about this program. I'm not a computer genius and I've only had a Mac for one year now, but when I purchased this program about two months ago, I wondered... Why did I wait so long??? This thing is GREAT! The Dell has officially been retired (YEAH!) I am very pleased with Parallels and it is nice to have access to Windows as needed. In our house, we log onto Windows pretty much on a daily basis, but only because we have to for certain programs. Other than that, we prefer the Mac OS.
Another reviewer recommended 1 GB RAM, but personally, with an Intel Core Duo (not Duo 2) I would recommend upgrading even more. My Intel iMac was a little slow with 1 GB so I added another 1 GB and it is now flawless. I recently purchased a MacBook Intel Core Duo 2 with just 1 GB RAM though and that works fine. The slowness that I experienced in the iMac seemed to come on after the recent update to Parallels.
About the recent update to Parallels (March 2007): After I realized that they had an update, I was able to download it off their web site for free and install it as directed. I had a few minutes of confusion as to what exactly I was supposed to install, but with a quick lookup, I was able to do what I needed to do to get it going. Purchasing the newest version of Parallels should prevent these issues. Mine was purchased back in February 2007.
IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL, BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE APPLE DISCUSSION BOARDS!!! - This is always the easiest way to answer your Mac related questions :-)
One final note... PLEASE! For $80, do you REALLY think that Windows is INCLUDED in this box??? That would be a silly assumption considering Windows XP Home Edition is listed with a $200 price tag. Don't blame the developers of this software for that issue. Parallels isn't a Microsoft product and does not contain the Windows program.

Your worst nightmare!, 2007-04-03 Hard to get going intially, all upgrades have caused the program to crash. Most recent crash led to massive data loss. Support section available at company website but they don't respond to email requests. No phone number provided--you must pay them via credit and then they claim they will call you back--they never called me back! They just took my money! Apple considers this third party software & therefore they do not support it. Keep in mind the following summary: hard to install, upgrades crash the program, risk of massive data loss, no email support, no telephone support. This is your worst nightmare; caveat emptor (buyer beware)!!

Didn't know I would have to purchase Windows too!, 2007-04-01 When I purchased Parallels I was not aware that you needed a full purchase of Windows also. All I have is what came with my computer, therefore, I cannot use Paralles! I haven't even taken it out of the box. After the purchase of an Apple, warranty, Parallels, I'm broke. Plus, I would have never purchased knowing what I know now. Expensive just to run Windows on a Mac. The reason I went to a Mac is its better. I'm not putting the product down, from what I hear and read its great.

Closed Book Easy, 2007-03-30 Have so far not cracked the parallels manual yet. Windows XP with MS Office 2007 loaded and all works great. Once I figured out that I needed to 'activate' the usb port for printing all has gone super. Speed on our 1st generation macbook has been more than acceptable. Dude....get that dell off my desk!
