 It's still easier to fly a real airplane..., 2008-04-02
Since weather does not permit, FSX is a great substitute, though it's still easier to fly the real thing. FSX installed into Vista HP without tweaks,setting resolutions and mapping switches on the Logitech E3DPro joystick without problems. Rod Machado's flight lessons and the Missions are great! Since I've flown actual training in the Reno-Tahoe area, the soaring tutorial mission at Minden was outstanding, except that I couldn't get breakast at the cafe. The additional $ for the deluxe edition is worthwhile, and even at low-res, I have been able to recognize the terrain features from earlier travels through the real landscapes. Dell Inspiron 1501, AMD Turion 64x2 TL56, 2GB RAM with Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. The money I saved over the Saitek X52 and pedals is going toward avgas. (Flour bombing seems easier from an actual airplane, too;>) I'm still working at it, which explains why only four stars on the fun; training is fun, but also a lot of work.

Would have saved my money if I had known that FS2004 was better. I couldn't get it to work even though I had enough memory and space on my computer. Even if you leave your settings at default, the program takes forever to load and it just doesn't work as well as FS2004. If you buy it make sure your computer is empty and there is absolutely nothing else running at the same time or you be disappointed. I finally uninstalled it.

A good graphics card. By good, I mean one with a pixel fill rate of 10billion or more (/s). Also, one with at least 100 stream processors (shaders).
To simplify, cards that will deliver excellent framerates for this game:
Any Geforce 8800
Any Geforce 9xxx, some of which are not yet out
Anything from the Radeon R600 or R700 line of chips. These chipsets are found in the 2xxx, 3xxx and 4xxx series of cards, again, some of which are not yet available
And the memory doesn't overly matter (I do wonderfully with a 8800GTS 320)
It doesn't matter how 'awesome' you THINK your graphics card is, because, chances are, it isn't, and if it's not included in those I mentioned, then it's not that hot.
I can not stress enough how important it is to have the right graphics card for this game, because contrary to popular beleif, you do not need the Godfather of all Systems to run this game.
My system specs:
-Intel C2 6420 (overclocked from 2.13GHz to 2.4GHZ on stock cooling)
-Geforce 8800GTS 320
-Atrix 650W Silent Power Supply
-Maxtor 320gb 7200RPM SATAII HDD
-ABIT Fatal1ty Motherboard
-Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 (5-5-5-12)
With settings at Ultra High, and a screen resolution of 1680x1050 the gameplay is excellent, detailed and very smooth (frame rates of 40+)
AS for the sim, as realistic a flying experience can come from no other. The new 3D virtual cockpit is just what was needed (You can look around the flightdeck, and operate everything in view), and adds great realism. Every plane, as expected demonstrates its own flying characterstics-it is possible to detect differences between the Maule Orion variants (with and without skis).
The scenery is good, not excellent. Built up areas are represented by large block buildings, except in larger cities, where the skyline is similar, but again, not perfect. However, saying this, it is an improvement on 2004, and besides, it can't be that easy to cram the whole world into 15GB.
The airports are largely accurate, the bigger the airport, the more accurate it is-don't expect your local field to be a carbon copy, and don't bother looking for your house when you take off from it :p (I can't even find my university)
The missions are enjoyable, challenging for any skill level (possibly exempting those with an ATPL), and come in great quantity.
All in all, with the RIGHT GRAPHICS CARD (still stressing), this game is a winner, providing the most realistic flight simulation available today. It can be used for fun flying, serious flying, to assist in flight training, and for landing a 744 on an aircraft carrier (it can be done).

Microsoft FS X - Works better than , 2008-03-11
Don't believe the negative hype. I have a newer computer (but no powerhorse), 1.6Ghz dual core w/2ghz RAM, and a simple integrated graphics card. With the resolution settings set to just under half, the simulator runs fine, with a smooth frame rate. At these settings, everything is quite clear, the landscape, the instrument panel, the weather, etc. So, no major issues on performance. Any system faster than mine should have even better results!

FSX a fabulous game - surprised about performance concerns, 2008-02-26
I have been gaming for over 25 years now and used to really enjoy flight sims but only recently returned to them via FSX after a 10 year break and what a pleasant surprise. FSX completely blew me away and is by far and away the best flight sim I have ever played. I was worried before I bought the game that I was going to run into all sorts of performance issues, as there appears to be a lot of talk about it on the web. Now, I have a Dell Inspiron 530S with 2.0ghz Dual Core, 2GB Ram, Vista, and a 128MB Radeon X1300, which most of you will know is by no means a top end gaming machine. Well my worries for FSX were not needed, the game ran fantastically. I run the game with the High graphics settings, and in 1024x768 and it runs very very smoothly, and I feel with a bit of tweaking i can get it running in higher details/resolutions. I have no idea what all the concern is about performance, perhaps as I am an old gaming hack my expectations for what is considered high performance is much lower. Anyway, the sim runs fantastic, and I can recommend it to anyone. If my featherweight Dell can run it, I am sure most machines can!
