Quak 4our, 2006-07-11 ill get strieght to the basics:
The GOODDD -you have teammates helping you through about half of the game -a nice veriety of weapons to use which are upgraded throughout the game (here that? UPGRADED!) -tons of different monstors (these robot human guys) -you can control vehicles at some points of the game (though its a bit weak) -theres a flashlight attachment to your 2 first weapons (FINALLY!!!) -some areas of the game are huge and beautiful (in a sense =\) -You become one of the strogg at some point (and its painful to watch too!) -kinda scary
The BAdd -Gets a little boring a little over half way done with the game (Or sooner) -not much time spent in vehicles -no flash light attachments to the rest of your guns -since its dark like in doom 3 its really hard to see your enemies.
so yeah thats all i can think so there ya go
Did I buy Doom 4 instead of Quake 4?, 2006-06-26 As with Doom 3, I didn't finish this game. Like D3 it's just mindless wandering through dimly lit mazes of bizarre machinery. Unlike D3 you don't have monsters suddenly popping up in your face, but the ambience is the same. Even with a fast rig it gagged sometimes and I had to play it at a lower res than I would have liked. I've been a FPS fan since Wolfenstein first came out, but I don't think I will buy any more ID games if they are going to be like this.
Get ready to be killed.... haha, 2006-06-03 Quake 4 is definitely a space and memory hog! I have a very high tech computer and it was pausing when I walked into large environments, and when I started fighting. If you don't have a fast enough computer its not worth buying it. You will just be dissapointed like I was. I never got very far in the game before I sold it for half the price I bought it new. I'm never going to do that again.

Well worth the price tag!, 2006-05-24 What Quake 4 lacks in gameplay complexity it makes up for in visual beauty. This is a beautiful game, no doubt about it. Now developing a great looking game engine isn't the most difficult thing in the world. Making a good looking engine that's EFFICIENT is a different story.
My PC is pretty average these days. 2ghz cpu, 1gb ram, 128mb video card. With this hardware, I can run the game at high settings with decent framerates. When I play FEAR or Oblivion, I tell myself it's time for a new system. When I play this game, I change my mind.
Aside from the visual feast, the gameplay is a step up from Doom 3. There's a few Halo inspired additions like vehicles and a shield system, and you'll also be fighting side by side with other marines. Also there's more variety in the environments. Pretty much all of Doom 3 took place inside industrial corridors. While you'll see a lot of that in Quake 4 you also experience spacious outdoor environments and varied indoor environments. This helps keep the game from feeling repetitive.
The sound is a top notch production. The score is great. It gives the game a hollywood movie feel to it. The voice acting is quite believable, and there's a perfect amount of communication happening between you and the other marines.
In my opinion, the game has 2 flaws. One is the AI, and the other is the multiplayer options. The AI is a bit too basic. They shoot at you, and dodge, but not much else. There have been times where i've hid behind a pillar and shot at them from a certain angle where they couldnt hit me and they wouldnt move at all, allowing me to kill them without being hit at all.
The multiplayer options are pretty ho-hum. There's an incredible amount of competition with online FPS and so many types of game styles, and you cant expect every game to create a revolutionary new style to the genre, but it would have been nice to see something new and fresh.
But I bought this game for the single player experience and it delivers. I think it's definately worth the price its going for right now.

A good example of poor software engineering, 2006-04-28 The most advanced game engine, pristine artwork, and exciting gameplay mean absolutely nothing if the software was designed to only work on a handfull of computer configurations on the planet. As someone who has a laptop with a Pentium 4 3.33 GHz CPU (with Hyper-threading), 1 GB of RAM, and an ATI Radeon graphics card: there is absolutely no excuse for any piece of software to behave as Quake 4 did on my machine. At least with Unreal Tournament: an incorrect driver/resolution setting will bring you to a trouble-shooting window that allows one to change the settings and/or run the software in safe mode. With "Quake 4" I am greeted with the computer-equivalent of an obscene gesture -- an immediate exit, without error. The only "useful" bit of assistance I was able to find on their "support" site was "get the latest drivers". This had zero effect. After doing some googling, the only information I could find involved using commands in id Software's proprietary configuration scripts. I'm a software engineer, so if I poured a few days into this, I could probably have hacked the scripts enough to the point of actually running. But frankily, I just don't have the time, nor the inclination to wrestle with the sloppiness on the part of folks at Activision/id Software. Thankfully, the local CompUSA store was gracious enough to allow me to return this for store credit (which I used to purchase a nice pair of computer speakers so I can enjoy my copy of GTA: San Andreas).
