Quake 4, 2006-10-26 The game is fun if you are in jail and time is not an issue. To say it takes forever to load does not begin to describe it. A half hour to get it started and then ten to fifteen minutes of play and then all over again and again. My computer exceeds all requirement of the game and still this game really and truly sucks. Not the game but the load time. Spend your money else where or take up sowing. Or read a good book. You will finish the book before you finish this game. Hope this helps. Don't say you were not warned!!!
Great, but a few flaws i would like to inform, 2006-10-07 Quake fans, FPS fans, PC gamer fans, whatever, this is a great game. The graphics and sound are great. The story line isnt horrible, however, I wasn't that impressed. The game comes with a bonus CD with 3 different versions of Quake 2 and lots of extras and movie/trailers for quake4. The weapons are fun, and dont take too long to get (unlike some games). You can even get weapon upgrades. Multiplayer is FLIPPIN SWEET!!! This is all adds up to build what i call "great in the most important ways".
I guess i just desribed the good stuff to you, so i think i will just get to what you need to worry about. In other words, heres the bad:
-The game has good graphics natuarly, so i wouldnt worry too much about the fact that the game requires lots of space and recommends you to have a good video card, or else you may experience some lags and slow, choppy movement (trust me, you DO NOT want to lag in multiplayer mode and lose the round because of it). If you go to video options, you can select 4 different visual qualities: Low, medium, high, and ULTRA FREAKIN HIGH!(its acualy just called "ultra high"). DO NOT select ultra high, no matter how tempted you are, it wil slow down your computer a ton; unless u spent like 1000 bucks on a video card.
-No melee atacks or grenades (although u do get a grenade launcher, which isnt even worth wielding by the way)
-very dark, and the only weapons that have a flash light are the 2 weakest weapons (well, the machine gun is OK i guess)
-Multiplayer is fun, but in every round there is always 1 player who seems to be better then everyone else and annoys the crap out of you, and always comes in 1st place.
-The game is loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong...like, 60 minuts 1 hour and 59 minuts and 60 seconds long, just to complete like a 5th of the game. I have the manual, so i can go through the game quickly, and i look in the manual and see that i have been playing for like 6 hours and i only have a 4th done....its a very hard game , too (even on the easiest difficulty!).
-Besides the fact that the pistol you have well, pretty much sucks, which you must use when u run out of ammo (and trust me, you run out of ammo alot), thats pretty much it.
One more GOOD thing. As you probably know, many many games require you to search and run around for like an hour or so before you acualy get a weapon. Then, you must run around for another hour until you get to the action (halflife series, doom series, a little in halo, AREA 51). All the quake games let you start out with a gun, and the action kicks in in like... 2 minuts(quake 2 it starts like in 3 seconds).
So anyway, thats pretty much it. The reason why i only took off one star for alll those things is because most of them are pretty minor, and arent much of a problem once u get used to it. So overall, yeah, you should get this game. You will enjoy it, that is, as long as you enjoy FPS games. I know i might throw some people off cause this is a kids review, but seriously, i play FPS games alot, and lots of them. Dont let my age fool you, I know a good FPS game when i play one, and this is a good FPS game!

Great mindless fun and visual eye candy, 2006-09-27 I was in the market for a mindless shooter that would deliver great visuals, great audio, and lots of shooting, and Quake 4 delivered on all accounts. It's not a perfect game, but it was perfect for what I was looking for at the time. Here is my take on it:
Good:
- Visuals. Even though this game is a year old, I was still impressed with the graphics. I love the opening planet invasion sequence. When you first land, you're ordered to enter the complex and rendevous with the team. But before just charging in, I stopped for a minute and looked up and saw alien fighters swooping in and out, large explosions, planetary guns firing off into space, and more. It was a real visual treat.
- Audio: The audio is fantastic. Bombs going off in the distance, aerial bombardments, gunfire from far off enemies. It's a cacophony of war sounds. The audio really helps keep the adrenaline flowing.
- Performance: I'm not experiencing any of the slowdowns people are reporting. I've turned on all the features including 2XAA. My system is a year old as well: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 1 GB RAM, eVGA 6800GS.
- Atmosphere: It's not quite as dark as some people have been saying. Yes, there are certain sections that are dark, but that's pretty realistic considering the power has been knocked out in certain areas of the complex. Also, there are several levels that take place outside, which is a nice change of pace.
- Squad AI: These guys actually know how to fight! They take cover and cover each other. And although, this might seem a little amateurish, they will often point the way. If you're in a dark corridor and don't know where to go, look at your squad mates and see which direction they're pointing. This will help about half the time. There are lots of sections where they rely on you to find the way.
- Enemy AI: I think the enemy AI is better than almost every game out there that I've played with the exception of FEAR. If you're new to really good AI, you'll be fairly impressed. They take cover and try to outflank you. The only thing they don't seem to do that the AI in FEAR does is they don't actually try to create cover by knocking things over.
- Weapons: They start out pretty standard: pistol, machine gun, shotgun, grenade launcher, but you start to get cool new weapons like the nail gun and lighting gun. I'm also putting this in the Pros section because they sound awesome.
- Vehicles: The troop transport is really cool and fun. See below for more on the bad ones.
Bad:
- Cut scenes: Some seem a little unnecessary and could have been accomplished through in-game dialogue. But again, with a lot of the "bad" things I list here, there is an upside. Quake 4 is such a non-stop adrenaline rush, these cut scenes provide an opportunity to catch your breath.
- Vehicles: These are really a mixed bag. There is one where you actually only sit in it for 30 seconds and take one shot, which is kind of weird. And I didn't enjoy the tank. It slid around too much. But I did enjoy riding on the back of the troop transport manning the machine gun. That was loads of fun just mowing down Strogg. So this one isn't all bad.
No comment: Multiplayer: I don't play multi-player Likeness to Doom: I've never played Doom
Quake 4 is perfect for what it is: a mindless but fun shooter with lots of great visuals and audios.

In the Dark, 2006-08-16 All in all, the game wasn't too bad.
I agree (somewhat) with the notion that it has a strong Doom feel, but that's mainly due to the space trooper in a futuristic metal facility fighting alien monsters. The map layout and scenery was very imaginative and oozes with sci-fi/horror goodness (or evilness as it were).
I really only have one problem with the game.
It's the lighting. The game tries to really capture a darker, grittier feel, but its is just too dark, even on a high res big LCD. Gamma tweaking, video card tweaking, patching... Nothing changes the horribly dark visuals. The theme is dark enough, and perhaps the lighting might enhance it for some...
The imaginative horrors are interesting, the missions and opponents feel different, the horrific cutscenes are fantastic... The AI is impressive, enemies being smarter and reacting better. The opening scene at the Strogg medical facility is one that I'll never forget. The weapons are fun at first, but they really don't have enough options to suite my tastes.
It was an average game for me, it feels like it hits below the mark for me. I should be giving it 4 or 5 stars, but the lighting really hurt my opinion of it. It's worth a play through single player for the low price tag and the amazing visuals.. but there's only so many times you can run by an enemy you don't see because of poor lighting (and I'm not talking about the "flashlight" corridors either), or attempt to shoot your team mates before you get tired of it. It's like they jammed so much detail into the modeling that they totally skimmed on the lighting effects.
It could have been an intentional decision, but it was really against my taste, and ruined my overall experience with this game.
From a long time fan and great killer!, 2006-08-05 Great Graphcs very fast game play they got it right with this one!
