Works great; here's how to get to its internal diagnostics website..., 2008-03-28 I'm a former DSL user who hasn't used Cable high-speed internet before, so I can't tell you how this modem compares to other models like the other customer reviews. But this one has been working great for me so far.
Just plugged it in and ran Comcast's self-install CD, which provisioned the modem without having to make any phone calls to Comcast. Within 10 minutes or so, I was connected to the Internet (had to reboot the PC once). Much, much faster than my old DSL. And I like its slim profile, although it appears it's only designed to stand vertically (6 1/8" tall).
The standby option is an interesting feature, but seems unnecessary unless you are connecting the modem directly to your computer without a router/firewall connected in between (in which case you'd want to be selective about how often your computer is exposed to the internet without firewall protection).
I think the USB connection option is a bad idea - it may mislead novice users into thinking it's OK to connect your computer directly to the internet.
I would highly recommend using this modem ONLY with a hardware router/firewall to protect your home computers (not just a software firewall, but hardware that blocks hackers from even seeing your computer).
The user guide doesn't appear to tell you how to access the SB5120's internal online diagnostics site. I found the IP address on Motorola's support page. Once the modem is up and running, go to 192.168.100.1 to view various diagnostics about it.
Nice standby feature, 2008-03-19 I am of the belief that the modems out there all work the same. I really liked this one for the standby feature as I leave my computers on all the time, but do not necessarily need internet all the time. This gives the option to press one button to lock out the internet without affecting any other performance; once a life saver when I started sending an email to the wrong person, oops ;-).
I did notice a sizable speed improvement over my several years old modem [...] so just maybe there are differences or maybe just my old one was worn out and moving a bit slower like I am.
Almost Heaven, 2008-03-18 I finally got a COX service tech that knew how to read the error counter (!) on my 2 Yr. old Linksys BEFCMU10 and he could see over 500 errors in it's history! (If you have email or web problems ask your IP to check your modem error log counter over the phone; I never even knew mine had one.) I asked him what unit he bought and he advised this one - Several days later I hooked it up to my Mac and within say 7 minutes it had started itself and asked me to power it down twice; then I got a COX screen to follow (about 4 minutes) and now I'm "ON THE ROAD AGAIN"; only much faster download speeds as indicated by http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/
BTWThe only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is that it does not a have a front panel reset button and is designed to stand up (not be placed horz.)
*I calculated that you can own your own modem and start saving in about 5 months compared to renting and I did not even have to use the install disc -just swapped it out with the Linksys and DONE.
Great modem and reasonably priced, 2008-03-12 Motorola makes a nice product. Right out of the box with minimum fuss, the unit was up and running. The best part is that this unit costs about ten dollars less than a comparable Motorola part selling at WalMart.
Comcast cable in. Internet out., 2008-03-03 It seems a little odd to write a 'review' of a product that does just what it is supposed to do. I switched from Qwest DSL to Comcast cable.
Open box. Attach Comcast cable. Connect ethernet cable to wireless Linksys router. Plug in power cable. Hello Internet.
Did need to call Comcast to let them know I was connected without their supplied modem and their '$29.95 installation kit', whatever that is.
