My Kids Give This Relatively Low Priced Software Two Thumbs Up, 2006-01-20
"Sky Heroes to the Rescue" is geared mostly for preschoolers although my kindergartener has been fighting with her little brother to get a chance to play too (lol).

The principle focus is on letter recognition, however there are opportunities to learn left-and-right, spelling, colors, and shapes as well.

The premise of the story is that the gang have brought Snuffy to see the wonderful Sparkleberry Tree. The only problem is that the Tree doesn't look so sparkly. In fact, it is sick and needs help from Jay-Jay and his friends to get better. And so they set out find clean water, good soil, clean air, plant food, sunshine and a `special ingredient' for the Sparkleberry Tree.

Where they go - What your child can learn

The Smog Patch -- Herky flies through a maze to disperse smog clouds. This game teaches left and right as well as coordination and `geographic' logic.

Terrytown Quarry -- Revvin Evan moves soil for the Tree from silos to carts. Color practice on Level 1 with Shape practice on 2 and Letter and Shape practice on Level 3.

The Cloud King's castle -- In this game on the first level there are clouds that have letters; your child is shown a word such as `pear' and is asked to click on every "P" in the sky. A picture appears after they are successful . [Just as an example of how much progress is contained in the game.... On level 3, your child will be asked to click on the letters that make up a word such as `orange' in the correct order.]

The Forest - This is not an easy game to describe, but essentially birds carrying the letters of the alphabet, in alpha order, sit on one of three lines with the exception of the `lost birds' with their letters. The `lost' birds are shown at the bottom of the screen. Your child will practice their letter recognition (and the alphabet) as they help each letter-and-bird to its rightful place in the alphabet. Level 3 has both upper and lower case letters.

Terrytown Hardware - Letters fall from the rafters while your child moves a basket to catch the correct one. [Incorrect letters bounce away from the basket .] The letters they are asked to catch spell a word (example would be `frog').

    Pros
    Lots of letter identification practice
    3 Levels of play
    Practice spelling
    Popular characters keep kids interested
Since the cartoon characters are digitally produced anyway, the segments with them are pretty clear
The introductory video and song are the same as in the show
Comments are always positive and are geared to keep kids trying

    Cons
Brenda Blue is a fuzzy, as are some segments of video taken from the show (my kids don't seem to be bothered by this)

There are quite a few screens that are long and cumbersome because there is no way to bypass the instructions being repeated *in full* every time you play (again my children don't seem to be bothered by this)

Five Stars. Inexpensive software that ran on our Windows XP machine. Geared mostly for preschoolers, most kindergarteners will like it too because of the popular Jay-Jay characters. There are 3 levels of play in which children do lots of letter identification and some spelling.

Fun and Educational are the words that I love, 2005-11-24
I had purchase this CD a week and a half ago and my three year son just loves it. He loves to dance and sing to the introduction. This CD has good selection of adventures to choose from. I'm not quite sure which one is his favorite cause he goes from one adventure to the next pretty quick.
This diffinetly fuels his learning and his imagination. It's also filled with the learning of nature and ecosystems and of course the discoveries of letters, words, patterns and songs. I strongly recommend this for your three year old and up.
