Modest performance, costly support. Not recommended. , 2007-03-24
This software definitely does convert documents to PDF format, but it does so at a high cost. In my experience it is no better than the freeware PDF995 program that does the same thing. The ScanSoft product also added unwanted "features" to my Word and Excel toolbars, in the case of Excel disrupting my carefully-crafted previous customizations. Simple tech support by email costs $9.95 per incident, and in my experience is of lower quality than the typical free tech support provided with other software.

Office 2007 Saves the day, 2006-12-21
I've been running ScanSofts product for a year because I think Adobe PDF creator is overpriced. ScanSoft launches slow, converts poorly, and has the worst tech support in the universe.

With any luck, the new Office 2007 features will help me eliminate this program from my desktop.

Correct Installation is the Key to Using this Great Alternative to Adobe Acrobat, 2006-11-02
I just completed the Herculean installation of this product and want to spare my fellow purchasers the aggravation I suffered. By the way, though the Nuance/Scansoft product support personnel tried to be helpful, in the end I solved the problem myself. Also, though the technical support was cooperative, there was NO technical support information on the company website, a condition I have urged the company to remedy.

The problems I faced were as follows:

    1. inability to remove the 'trial version, [...];
    2. inability to use the FormType feature; and
    3. freezing.

The company tried to help by sending me Scansoft Converter Professional 3.2, which is only available from their technical support representatives, but after installing this to no avail, I resolved the three (3) problems described above by another method as follows:

    1. I deleted the PDF Converter 3 Professional (3.2 version) program Nuance provided me via its website.

    2. I disengaged my Internet cable.

    3. I shut down all my programs (e.g., firewall, antivirus).

    4. I installed PDF Converter Professional 3 from my original disk.

    5. When the software asked me to press the 'activate now' button, I did the following FIRST:

    a. I turned on my antivirus (Kaspersky) and my firewall (Zone Alarm), and re-connected my Internet cable. (**It is vital that you turn on your firewall and your antivirus before you re-connect to the Internet.**)

    b. I pressed the 'Activate Now' button at the software prompt and completed the installation process.

    Result:

I opened a PDF document, and no trial watermark appeared. Also, the FormTyper feature worked perfectly. As for freezing, this is no longer a problem, and the program is no slower than the Adobe PDF programs I've used.

    Conclusion:

The software requires communication with/permission from Nuance/ScanSoft's servers before the trial watermark will be removed. Obviously, some lock feature exists to prevent unauthorized use/transfer. Unless that lock is removed by some information from Nuance/Scansoft's server, the watermark will remain AND the FormType feature will be inoperable (previously I received an error message saying that I was not authorized to use the FormType feature).

****ZONE ALARM USERS***: ScanSoft continously monitors use of its software (obviously to halt piracy) by removing the default trial watermark EACH TIME a PDF is created, so even if you follow the previously described steps, you MUST alter Zone Alarm to allow ScanSoft to access the Internet or you will get the watermark. (You don't have to give the program server rights, and you shouldn't.)

Now that my software is properly installed, I can say that it is a marvelous alternative to the shamefully overpriced Adobe Acrobat programs.

    Nuance? More like Nuisance, 2006-09-13
Needed to convert a PDF file today. Created an account to order the downloadable version thinking I'd get it right away. Paid via PayPal. Received confirmation e-mail but no download link. Checked status..."under review". Check PayPal..Nuance grabbed the cash already. Checked status..."under review". Tried to send e-mail asking how long review would take...need to create a separate account just to contact them. Decide to call instead. They say PayPal takes a couple of days to process. I say "You took the money out of my account already". I say "cancel the order". They say "Can't do that..it is under review". They suck. Google Nuance Communications and see the lawsuits and crooked behavior in the past. This is my last dealing with Nuance Communications. I have NO idea what the product is like since they seem to be unable to provide modern online transactions. What do they have? An e-mail box that someone opens up once a day to manually process the orders?

    Useless, 2006-08-23
It worked horribly, if it worked at all. The main purpose I bought this is to convert pdf document into MS Word. The word file is barely useable - the formating is messed up, the font is changed, etc. If you want to generate pdf from word, it does not work well either. Some figures are completely messed up. ScanSoft software is a big joke for any serious use. It is not even worth $10.
