Solid title with good game play on Mac Mini, 2005-06-22 I have been playing this game more than a week, several hours a day and can say this game plays pretty well on a system that meets the minimum requirements for the game. I have a new Mac Mini which runs on a 1.25 GHz G4 processor, has 512 Megs of Ram, uses an ATI Radeon 9200 video card with 32 Megs of VRam, and MacOS 10.3.8. You do NOT need a "new" G5 to play this computer. As long as you have at least a Radeon 9000, 1.2 GHz processor and at least 512 Megs of Ram, you should be able to play this game.
When I installed the game, the video settings were automatically set to the lowest default for the best gameplay. Startup of the game is initially quick, but loading a saved lot with a family and lots of items might take about 30 seconds or so to load. I started creating a family with two people set up in a relatively small house, and gameplay is just fine until you get more than eight people on a lot. The maximum number of family members you can have on a lot is eight. More than that gameplay gets a bit choppy, since there are so many people and their aspirations the game is trying to keep track of. When this happened, it was hard to scroll around the house and use the camera angles to keep track on specific Sims. Sometimes the control panel response during this time was sluggish. However if you went into Build or Buy mode, the game jumped back into speed again.
I was rather discouraged to see reviews below that were just trashing the game because they did not pay attention to the system requirements or researched it on Aspyr's Web site. Game specs can always change, and the ones listed on this site were probably early ones before the game went through lots of testing and was shipped to retailers. And assuming a computer will play the game even when it does not meet the minimum requirements is asking for trouble. New games like the Sims 2 usually work with the newest computer technology, and not all Apple computer models will be able to play the game.
So in conclusion, on my computer that meets the minimum requirements to play this game, it plays good and is very addictive. It is worth the money I spent and will provide many, many hours of entertainment for me and my family.

Even with top-of-the-line specs, still too slow, 2005-06-22 I got my iMac in January - 1.8MHz G5, 1GB of RAM. And STILL, the game runs too slow for me to play it adequately. Maybe the video card that comes standard with the computer isn't good enough? I don't know enough about that sort of stuff to say. The control panel doesn't flicker in and out like some people have complained about, but movement is extremely choppy, and trying to change the resolution and shading and stuff to try and get it to go faster was a failure -- and took about a minute and a half to resolve itself, anyway. It's a shame, as the game itself is very fun -- the sims are much more self-reliant and have a ton more options as far as what to do. The create-a-sim portion of the game is extremely detailed, with a gazillion different options to customize faces. However, the number of clothing choices is far more limited than I'm used to from the last game. Same goes for house decorations, although the actual options for constructing houses is pretty great.
Honestly, though, Amazon and Aspyr should offer some sort of refund-policy for those of us who DO meet the specifications and STILL can't play the game. It's a rip off, and incredibly frustrating, as one of the main reasons I got my new computer was to be able to play the new sims (yes, I know I'm lame).

Highly addictive, 2005-06-21 I bought this game five days ago and have spent nearly every spare moment playing it since. The gameplay blows Sims 2 out of the water. Not just the amazing graphics and camera panning, but the intelligence and abilities of the Sims themselves are much greater.
Just a few examples:
- They actually acknowledge each other's presence, smiling when a partner walks by for example
- They can make many different foods, go grocery shopping, and actually *set the table*
- They can work out to a stereo or TV, and can even learn yoga!
The only major thing I'm not thrilled with is the new aspiration system; while interesting, it makes the game a bit too structured for my taste, encouraging Sims to keep fulfilling mini-goals ("wants") to keep them happy while the player (at least me) might want to pursue other goals. Some wants can be as simple as eating a bowl of macaroni and cheese; more ambitious wants might include having "WooHoo" with 10 different Sims (not so easy since jealousy is very much still in the game!)
Aging is a controversial addition, but it can be slowed, or (using a cheat) halted altogether. Also, there are only 10 jobs, but that deficiency will be remedied when the expansion packs are ported to Mac, hopefully.
A note on system requirements, as a lot of people seem to be rating this game 1 star just because their system didn't meet them. I installed this game on a 1.8GHz single processor G5 running OS 10.3.9, and the game runs very smoothly for me. You do not need a "brand new G5" in order to play this game; my Mac is nearly two years old.
I only hope that Aspyr will port Sims 2 expansion packs as well, now that the Mactel processor switcheroo scenario has been announced. I'm already jealous looking at what PC users are currently enjoying in University.

If you have the requirments its great, 2005-06-21 Luckily I have a fairly new powerbook with a system that is actually above whats recommended, so I find this game very playable. The only things that are slow are load times and every once in awhile the screen slows down so it takes a little while to scroll.
I did a little searching before purchasing this game, just to see if anyone else was having the same problems as listed here and I found that most people I asked could work the game. It was a little slow for some people, but for the most part it worked.
Just make sure that if you buy this game you have above whats listed as a requirement, like space and speed. As long as you have that you should be able to play the sims 2 with no problems.
And of course its an awesome game when it works, much better than the original. I'm surprised by how much more you can do with this version. I'm still trying to figure out all the tricks. And beware that once you start playing its very hard to quite. 4 hours flys by.

Unless you have a BRAND NEW G5, DO NOT BUY!!!, 2005-06-21 Seriously! I thought I'd sneak by with my machine. I mean, come on! I can handle a game that runs a little slower. Well, you can't play the game when the control panel in the game flickers in and out, because you don't have the hardware to support it.
People! Listen to the ACTUAL Mac users that bought this software, not the kids that played SIMS 2 on their PC. Don't even risk buying this if you have the "minimum" recommended requirements. SERIOUSLY! It DOESN'T WORK!
