Tiger is Great!, 2005-08-29 I was hesitant to upgrade to the Tiger system from my Jaguar system because of possible program conflicts and how well it supported Classic 9 which I still have several important programs in, but the upgrade went smoothly! My computer now boots up twice as fast and shuts down twice as fast! I like the Dashboard widgets to keep track of just about anything you are interested in and I like how the finder can arrange all your open windows on the desk top so you can see everyone of them, if you want, so you can then figure out which one you want to concentrate on. All my programs that worked with the Jaguar system work with Tiger and Classic 9 is still well supported. I highly recommend it!

A subtle appeal but worth the money, 2005-08-29 Tiger has a subtle appeal, the kind of thing that grows on you over time. Let me give you a little background. I have used every version of OS X since the preview beta, but 10.4 was the first iteration that failed to immediately make me say "wow." Jaguar and Panther gave me not only new and improved features, but also serious speed increases. For the first time, Tiger -- while not slowing things down -- brought with it no corresponding speed bump. Likewise, its features, while cool, did not jump out at you.
Now, after having used it for a number of months, I have revised my opinion and believe the upgrade makes sense. I cannot imagine ever going back. It is rock solid, rarely requiring a reboot. It still has the fastest suspend/resume of any computer system I have ever used. It continues to make strides in usability--I love that the ctrl/opt/cmd/caps lock keys can easily be arranged for optimum speed. Coupled with Quicksilver, this is the most keyboard-centric computer I have ever used (making it the fastest computer I have ever used interface-wise).
Anyone still undecided on the upgrade should do so immediately. You will certainly not regret it.

The best keeps getting better, 2005-08-29 I've been a PC user since 1993 and never thought I'd buy a Mac. But after I reached the limit of what OS/2 Warp could do for me (in 2001) in started looking into MacOS X. I bought my first Mac used in the summer of 2004 and have run MacOS X 10.2, 10.3 "Panther" and now 10.4 "Tiger" on the same Mac. Each version is faster than the one before it (highly unusual in the PC market), has numerous features that make using my Mac both more enjoyable and easier and supports an increasing number of programs and hardware.
MacOS X 10.4 Tiger has been incredibly stable, it looks fantastic, it boots in about a minute (maybe a minute and a half) on my 2+ year old Mac and it networks perfectly with my Windows 2000 PC so I can share files in both directions. If you're a Windows user thinking about buying a Mac, I highly recommend looking up reviews of features such as Expose (which has had such an impact on me that I find myself trying to use this in Windows and wondering why it doesn't work), Dashboard and Spotlight (the built-in search utility which Microsoft promises to "invent" sometime in late 2006 but which Apple has already released).
If you're already a Mac user, and you're not at least running 10.3 Panther, then there's really no good reason to not upgrade to Tiger. You get all the benefits of Panther (like Expose) plus Tiger's new features.

An Excellent Upgrade!, 2005-08-26 If you are real-time Mac user then this is to be the upgrade you MUST have! It has possibly everything you could ever want, you could also do just about anything you want it to do. Such as, if you wanted to find out if you have program or you need help finding it Tiger's Spotlight is an excellent directory tool, displaying the path and filename or you can click on it to take you directly there and it also comes up with search results as you type. Also, packaged with enhanced software such as Quicktime 7, itunes 4, DVD Player 4.6, and more! It also contains enhanced virus immunity, home media creation software, address books, iChat, Garageband, Automator, classic environment support (OS 9), advanced internet browsers (lastest versions of Safari and Internet Explorer), iPhoto, and much, much more! It also far functionality than the previous operating systems for Mac, and it also beats Windows! Take my advice, if you would like to bring your Mac's operating system to the max!

Very annoying..., 2005-08-23 I'm a longtime Mac user and this is by far the most annoying 'upgrade'. Spotlight alone makes me so angry I want to scream *&^%$!!! If you're working in a production environment and have to switch a number of drives back and forth you'll not be happy with this horrible software automatically trying to index the volumes... and there's no way to turn it off!!!! Spotlight also lacks some of the functionally of the previous find. As for being faster, I'm not seeing it. After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, BBEdit all run slower... much slower. Widgets... annoying bs to eat up cycles, but at least you can turn them off. On the up side Xcode is running better (thank you). Also there is now a halfway decent dictionary application.
Over all, two steps forward and three back.
