    Absolutely useless, 2005-05-05
I don't know why people are hailing Tiger as such a great tool; practically everything new is useless. Spotlight for instance, what's the big deal? You mean you don't know where you keep things on your computer? It's not that difficult to find stuff with just a few clicks, and even if you have a lot of files, the "Find..." feature of pre-Tiger OSX systems was fine. Plus, Spotlight *EATS UP HARD DRIVE SPACE*.

Next, widgets...basically they're there to slow down your computer, and they have no useful function. Let's face it, they're eye candy. Sherlock did most of this stuff (and still does) just as well, and you could still work with other apps while using it. With Dashboard, you go into "Dashboard mode"; with Sherlock, you were working as usual. Stupid addition.

Finally, the addition of RSS to Safari. So what? Basically you end up getting a lot of news you'll never read.

    Tiger--thpppt.

    Shipping Problems, 2005-05-04
I haven't recieved the program yet because I used the free shipping option. I can wait a few extra days. Odds are if you're on a newer machine it will work fine. Most people that have had problems with this are on older machines that need updating regardless. If your'e using native programs then you won't have problems. Obviously they can't get everything to work in all cases. People make me laugh when it comes to these kinds of things.

My problem with this is Amazin themselves. I used, again, the free shipping method and had it delieved to my home where most companies leave it, and or have you sign a card and then they will leave it. Well Amazon has used UPS and a person MUST be there and CANNOT sign a card. So that means I just spent a half hour back and forth trying to find an alternate address to ship this package to. I work out of state, live in NJ, and work in NYC so shipping it to my work would have been another 2 or 3 days minimum. Unless it was in very small print somewhere on the ordering forms within Amazon it was never specified so please take it into account. I've never actually had this problem with them before. I can understand where they're coming from but it should have been specified blatantly somewhere on the site.

The Apple of my Eye of the Tiger, 2005-05-04
I pre-ordered Tiger 10.4 from Amazon and got it from UPS early yesterday (5/2/2005) afternoon. I considered doing the fresh install, backing up everything and starting over, but decided I would try that next time.

After installation I was blown away by the Tiger-like smoothness and quickness of the new OS. The startup time is much quicker than it used to be - a far cry from the original OS X. Of course, it has gotten better with each subsequent release of software, but not as noticeable as Tiger.

Despite naysayers, the entire upgrade is worth every penny - especially if you ordered from Amazon.com. Spotlight, Widgets, Automator - all of the OS workings is easy to understand and customize. Spotlight works great - I typed in a random name in the dialog box and it brought up everything imaginable on my HD and beyond in regard to that name...very nice. I'm in love with the widgets - I customized my widget layout and downloaded some others to add and subtract at my heart's content. My wife (bless her heart, she has a Windows based machine) came into my office and saw the widgets in action and dishearteningly said, "I can't do that on Windows, can I?" I told her she couldn't have pseudo-widgets until Microsoft copied Apple again, which she laughed and retorted, "how true." I have only read about Automator, but I'm sure once I set it up it will undoubtedly aide in my everyday tasks.

The built in RSS for Safari is wonderful - makes searching for an article very simple and streamlined on a webpage. QuickTime 7 is solid and a worthy upgrade from 6.x.

There's an abundance of so many other new and wonderful features, that I cannot possibly touch on their technological brilliance in this review. For all the scoop, visit: http://www.apple.com/macosx/

To make a longhorn story short, you absolutely cannot go wrong with switching to Apple OR upgrading to Tiger. This tenacious yet graceful cat has shattered windows and smashed gates once again.

    Tiger flaws, 2005-05-03
Although Tiger has many great features that other reviews have addressed, beware of a couple of things. The most glaring is one Apple should have found prior to release and involves the Pages program in iWork. Export to PDF worked flawlessly with Panther, but since installing Tiger, it's hard to know what my Pages-to-PDF will look like. Sometimes, there, is, a, comma, after, every, word, like, in, this, sentence (annoying, isn't it?). Other times the export drops shadows from graphics. Forrest Gump said, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you will get." Dear old Forrest could just as easily been talking about Page's export capabilities with Tiger.

A second problem may not bother everyone, but for those who use (or used prior to Tiger) HP's 6840 wireless printer, Tiger will leave it installed but inoperable. Even reinstalling hasn't helped, and Apple's tech support was not able to resolve the issue (or the one with Pages).

If dashboard widgets and quick searching are more important to you than wireless printing and dependable exporting, Tiger will serve you well. Otherwise, stick with Panther. And by the way, if you don't like Tiger after installing it, tech support informed me that I could easily switch back to Panther if I'm willing to wipe out all my files in the process. There's no refund, but what price can you put on Apple's help in wiping your computer clean of any work you may have done prior to the reinstall? Apple beat Microsoft's Longhorn OS to the market by a mile, but perhaps waiting until the bugs were worked out would have been a smarter move.

it has form and function, 2005-05-03
ok, it is easy to use and is as simple as can be, but it has the power of a high end server, might not seem like it, but just open the revamped version of x11 (x-free-86 in a nut shell) and you can devlope, manage, acesses, edit, and maintain any part of you system, oh and you can do all of that for the user interface. it is no enigma if you have a problem, usealy it can be fixed by just doing a reboot (i am not talkin abouty when it freazes, beceasy that almost never hapens (i havent had a crash yet, only 2 force quits (and thoes dont frease up you system)). as for thoes people that constenly frease up uppon installing and everything is not working, they need to check the system requrements for tiger, or they need to stop lieing.

oh and micrsoft will try to copy, but they cant touch this.
