Spotlight doesn't work with MS Word files+!, 2005-05-11
Organizing my research files which were typed into multiple MSWord docs over the years was THE ONLY REASON I wanted 10.4. Now I find that "Spotlight" is choosey about which Word files it indexes--apparently. I did all the required tests; I opened docs, found odd words or names, and then Spotlighted them. At first it seemed promising. Many docs were indexed until I noticed that many older ones still in earlier versions of Word were not. I updated them to Word X and that seemed to work. But, I found, it DID NOT work for all updated Word files. Now I am not sure what IS and IS NOT indexed. Other docs including Pagemaker and Freehand also have this problem--this is hardly what Mac advertised Spotlight to be. I just bought an engine-less car!

    GRRRRRRRRRR, 2005-05-08
Probably too early to write about the total pros and cons of the software, but so far it's been a good experience.

I was a little surprised at the amount of time it took to install the actual software. Maybe I have warpped expectations. But the time was the only installation issue. Forced restarts are kind of part of the deal and wasn't a huge issue for me.

My PowerBook G4 is a bit newer, so unlike others who have older Apple models, I don't think the upgrades are as jarring for me.

Spotlight is nice. Quick and efficient. And unlike some detractors, those who use do have a lot of files, it is just an easier way to locate them than utilizing Finder.

The Dashboard function is very cool and is something I will use often. The weather and iTunes ones especially. But the ability to have a number of additional widget downloads is nice - for blogging or what have you. Many of them are very area specific, but still could be plenty useful.

I feel a little better that I got a $50 instant rebate for Tiger. I feel I got a bargain for an upgrade. Probably worth it for full price especially if you had an older OS on your Mac.

    Awesome! Best OS ever!, 2005-05-08
I wrote a bad review of Panther because it wasn't as stable or bug-free as Jaguar, but Tiger makes up for all of that. This is simply the best OS I've ever used. It's faster than Panther, and fixed a bug I was having that made printing a problem. The Dashboard is my favorite feature - I use it constantly, for everything from looking things up on Amazon.com to posting to my Blogger account. The new Spotlight search is wonderful- if it can't find it, it's not on your computer.

Naturally, you want to back up your data before you install Tiger. However, I found that all of the warnings I got about using the "erase and install" option were unfounded. I used the simple "upgrade" option to install it and it was completely trouble free. The only caveat I've found so far is that my third party software registrations were invalidated, but that happens with most OS changes.

I haven't had a crash yet. The system doesn't get bogged down as quickly when I have a lot of windows open as it did in Panther. Even my non-Apple software seems to work more efficiently. I really recommend this upgrade for anyone who is less than thrilled with Panther.

    oh apple, 2005-05-06
tiger works pretty well. but it seems that whenever apple releases an update, old problems from previous versions are fixed but a new set arrives. it's a vicious cycle. but honestly, tiger really improved my computer's performance. it boots up faster, safari doesn't quit as often. it's bliss. but what is the deal with the iTunes widget?? it has an annoying delay. it's quicker to just open up iTunes or select next track by right clicking on iTunes in the dock. they'll fix this i hope. widgets are so cool. spotlight is cool... in theory. it does what it says it will but i don't care about finding things super fast on my computer anyways. i'm so desperately lonely.

    Nothing Compares To Apple, 2005-05-06
    Running a G4 1.3 PowerBook, 512MB ram

This is an amazing OS, yeah, its alot like panther with alot of quirks, updates and cleaner. The Dashboard is one of my favorites, nice easy access to calculator, weather, address book and a whole lot more with only hitting one key on and off. Next would be the updated slideshow and image features, wow, what a cool update. Automator looks impressive, soon as you learn how to do workflows, it gets easier. Runs Adobe Photoshop and illistrator with no issues. Safari seems to be faster, no issues so far, mail, address book seem to add a few more features and some design updates.

Being a Windows user most of my PC life, I decided to try a Apple ibook last year, since then I purchased a Mac Mini, PowerBook and an iPod. Apple has proven how stable, powerful and user friendly a computer can really be. My Dell PC and HP Laptop occassionally had mini-issues with freezing, more pop-ups and just always needed to restored to get it running just right, I never have done that with my mac, just keeps running, I can use Macs MS Office, works great between both Mac and PC versons. I still use Windows based machines but its no Mac. OK, thats more than I was going to write, but I am a true new Mac fan, if they keep the trend they have today, I will be one for a long time.

OS X Panther was Great, OS X Tiger is Amazing, Recommend it if your Mac will take it.
