Myst IV: Revelation, 2004-08-16 This is the first Myst title to be rated T (for Teen) for Mild Violence. I'm about a third of the way through this thing, and apparently the only violence in this game is violence that you witness (and so far, even that is partly obscured), but otherwise, there's no combat, just like all the other Myst titles.
You really need a super duper computer for this. Anyone know where I can get a discount on a Cray? Seriously, though, you'll need at least 700 Mhz of power, and the latest video cards. (Fortunately, this also works on Macintosh, but again, you'll need a powerful Mac to pull it off.) However, it's worth it. None of the static images of the previous games. Trees sway in the breeze. Animals dart around (although the birds in Tomahna can get annoying), insects buzz around you, etc.
The story: (Caution: SPOILER! if you haven't played the original Myst!) It's been 20 years since Atrus reluctantly destroyed the linking books that entrapped his sons Sirrus and Achenar. However, the descriptive books that held them were left intact, and Atrus and his wife Catherine are torn as to whether the two have learned their lesson and should be released. In the meantime, they had a daughter, Yeesha, who is now 10, and she's disappeared. You have to find out what happened to her. Are Sirrus and/or Achenar involved? There's only one way to find out - find the descriptive books and travel to their Ages.
Yeesha dropped her amulet, which you can pick up, and if it flashes in certain scenes, you can click on it and get flashbacks and clues. You can also keep a journal with screenshots for easy reference. (I just wish it wasn't so hard to print screenshots in Windows!) There are the usual red herrings (which are actually useful as character backgrounds), lots of strange devices to figure out and of course, photorealistic graphics.
The puzzles are about as difficult as the original Myst, and, as usual, there's very little (if any) inventory. It's all in first person mode.
I've always considered the Myst series to be the Gold Standard for Adventure (as in non-violent) Games, and this one seems to hold up to that tradition.
UPDATE: for those of you trying to play this on a DVD-RW, there ARE drives that will play this. I have an Iomega Super DVD Writer 12X, and it works with no problems. Occasionally, the game may freeze for a few seconds, but that may be the computer or a game bug. Sadly - to my knowledge, anyways - amazon doesn't carry this drive.

BEST MYST GAME YET, 2004-07-14 This game will not only shed light on new and old questions about the Myst Saga but will also feature some of the most detailed graphics for any game that has been made. Looking forward to playing it.

They have done it again!, 2004-07-04 I am anticipating this game more than any other - including Halo 2. I'm told the technology is stunning, not to mention the sheer mass! Three DVDs long, this is sure to be the most immersive game I've ever played!by the way - Myst is a game the way Bach is a musician. :)
