Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander, 2008-09-12 Now that I got this to work, it is great. It helps me in the back of my house.
Mucho Problemos, 2008-09-10 Have had this "range expander" for a couple of years. Every now and again I'll dig it out and after much hair pulling, get it working only to remember why I hate it. It causes the wireless clients to get confused and which access point to use and every so often goes red for no apparent reason and screws up the network. Stay away from this brick.
Little Range Extension, 2008-09-09 I had no problem setting this unit up. I popped the CD into a wireless laptop, and two minutes later both lights were blue. It was when I went to place it at a further point in my house that I found problems. The farthest I could go from WRT54GS Linksys router (with high gain Linksys antenna) was 20 feet, in a straight line, unobstructed (with walls in between, it's more like 15 feet). After that, the signal was lost. (I was checking it on the laptop with netstumbler, which picks up access points and measures their strength.) Whether that's a problem with the router, or the expander, take your pick.
Either way, pretty poor performance for the Linksys products.
Works well---horrible set up process and software, 2008-09-08 I didn't read the Amazon reviews before purchasing the Linksys Wireless Expander v. 3 from a well-known office supply store---but they are spot on. The good news is that it works really well. The bad news is that the set-up instructions and software really couldn't be worse. I'm fairly tech savvy and after 2+ hours I finally called the 800 number. The set-up they tech support rep walked me through was exponentially more complicated than the instructions or the disk that comes with the hardware. A few key tips if you are considering this hardware: 1. If you lack technical aptitude either find a friend to install for you (and buy them a nice lunch/dinner) or call the 800 number immediately.
2. Throw away the CD that comes with the Expander--it is useless.
3. Turn off all APs except the one you want to "amplify" and turn off all security on your router.
4. use a hard wire connection to configure your router. If typing the address in doesn't work immediately (192.168.1.240), you will have to configure your LAN connection to point to that IP.
5. If resetting the Expander doesn't work at first--don't despair. I had to do it several times and power on/off for it to work.
In summary---for effectiveness, this equip gets a 5. For ease of set-up/use, it gets a 1--hence my 3 rating.
Good luck! Bill
Run Away!, 2008-09-07 Do not buy this product! It is faulty from set-up to use. And nothing works without major doses of help from other users (as you've read here).
And when it's set-up, it doesn't do a very good job.
So spend you money on a new wireless router with extended capabilities.
You are warned.
