Hahaha! This thing rocks!, 2005-07-10 Interestingly, this is the mouse that turned me back into a mouse user from trackballs. Before acquiring the MX510, I used a Logitech Marble Mouse. It was extremely precise, but lugging around the trackball to and from school was a real pain. In time, I managed to fling the marble ball across the classroom while trying to extract it from my bag. When I finally recovered the ball two days later, I found several nicks in the ball that didn't allow it to run smoothly anymore. After this little incident, it was time for a change.
I found the MX510 at CompUSA and purchased it on a whim, as I've never heard of the MX optical engine in my entire life. It had a rebate attached, and this lowered the price sufficently that I could afford it sans sticker shock. As soon as I took it home, I marveled first at how nicely it fit my hand. The sculpted shape fits marvelously, spectacularly in my hand. I actually find any other mouse awkward after using the MX for a period of time.
The MX Optical Engine is not hype. IT WORKS! When they say "NO LAG" they mean it. Unlike my Logitech Optical Black USB Mouse, it kept up effortlessly in Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, and I did better with it than any other mouse or trackball!
For real work though, you can't go wrong with the MX510. The cruise control is very efficient, but needs to be fine tuned by the user, or it will be either too fast or too agonizingly slow in scrolling. I switched the function of the Application Quick Switch button to "Minimize All" in Logitech's MouseWare so as to hide any web surfing from my teachers. (Please don't tell) And the web back/forward buttons are invaluable; you'll find yourself looking for them if you ever do change back to another mouse.
Honestly, the only fault I can find with this mouse is that it's corded...If they had a mini-transceiver version of the MX500-series with perhaps a Fast RF system, it would be near perfect. I know they have the MX700 and MX900, but these are designed with monolithic transceiver/charger bases that are not at all suited to mobile use. If only...
I have sadly relegated my MX510 to home duty in the name of mobile freedom, but it is hands-down the best mouse I've ever had. Bar none.
Best Mouse I've Ever Used, 2005-07-05 Very happy with the MX510, if you use a large high-res screen, it makes all the difference in how far you have to move the mouse. MS Explorer mice cranked all the way up don't even come close. Also highly recommended for gaming.

Good mouse., 2005-05-05 This mouse is nice. It tracks very smoothly, and it conforms perfectly to my hand. The color is a little weird, but it looks okay. I bought it because I got sick of using Apple's one button mouse and my bluetooth mouse was unreliable for certain activities like games. I am using this mouse with Mac OS X 10.4 and currently have the extra buttons set to control Dashboard and Exposé. I am very satisfied with this product.

Good mouse overall, 2005-03-24 This mouse works really well, it is fairly ergonomic. The only problem is that my hand is not that big, so the mouse does seem a tad bit big for me to become totally comfortable. When I do regular work, the mouse is great... but when I game, that is when I wish the mouse was just a tad bit smaller. My thumb can not reach the "forward" button on the side. It reaches the "back" button just fine. I set the mouse to double-click with the "scroll" button, but it doesn't work when I play games. The "up" and "down" scroll buttons are sort of awkward to use if you are trying to work fast.
All-in-all, I would say this is a great mouse if my hand was just a bit bigger with longer fingers. I guess a big hand would love this mouse, but I would wager that the buttons will be a tad bit difficult to control even then. This mouse is very accurate, the infrared doesn't miss a beat.
Would I buy this mouse again? If it was a little smaller, absolutely, yes.... the surface design is hard to beat. I still would not consider this the "ultimate" mouse as I had originally though it would be. I am a owner of two of their "Gaming Mouse" from years back, it's too bad they don't offer infrared mouses for those three button design (they didn't come with scroll wheels).

Better than ever but not quite perfect, 2005-03-05 This is an awesome mouse, the availability of extra programmable buttons is really handy and it is very easy to use. My only problem is that buttons programability is limited to a single keystroke or key combination. What I was hoping for was to program a single button for tasks like Ctrl-A followed by Delete. But the only way to do it was to program two buttons. Now don't get me wrong, being able to do all of that extra stuff from the mouse and not having to reach for the keyboard is a huge time saver, but hey, I'd like doing it all with a single click twice as much. Let's face it, it's the best bang for the buck! And hope that some day, the software will be upgraded to accomplish even more with even less effort.
