A real review, 2004-05-29 Not very pleased with this installation, my video card does not work so I have a command line installation. This is like going back to the darkages of computing, I have to say Windows just works for me. It is hard to get a virus in linux when no one uses it. Plus, no decent software from what I read on the box.

Fantastic! No problems, everything just worked, 2004-05-28 Did a "Standard Desktop Install", leaving all the defaults pretty much in place. Added a few applications. SuSE recognized and correctly configured all my hardware. I installed on a box based on a shuttle small-form factor PC: P4 2.8, 512 ram, Nvidia 128 meg geforce video card, onboard realtek sound, 17 inch Hansol flat panel. The only changes I made after installing were to change the display resolution (using YaST) from the default 1024 X 768 16 bit to 1280 X 1024 24 bit. I also used YaST to install the 3D drivers from Nvidia. It was all very, very easy. 3D works great. Sound works great. Display is beautiful. Comes with an amazing selection of applications: Open Office, The Gimp(photoshop type image editor), CD and DVD burners, A good firewall, all the programming tools you could ever want, full blown web server capapilities, various high quality databases - just to name a few -too many to list. You'd spend hundreds to get the equivalent apps in Windows. Blindingly fast. Very professional looking. Stable. No virus worries. No severe license restrictions. Fantastic. I'm completely satisfied. I highly recommend SuSE 9.1 professional. Dave

Does not even compete with Windows XP Professional, 2004-05-28 After Suse corrupted my Windows partition, my thoughts on linux sunk to a all time low. Beware of linux, it is not for anyone who needs multi-media. If you want to view, edit or even use any form of multi-media forget it. You cannot even play an mp3 in linux. What an overpriced heap of junk, after a re-format of my hard-disk Windows took over again.

SUSE 9.1 OK but It Trashed Windows, 2004-05-27 OK. I liked the linux distro and the included apps. However, When I tried to boot into Windows, my computer wouldn't do so. However, I was able to restore my Windows using Norton Rescue files. Until June 25, I thought I had done something stupid while installing Linux. However, quoting from the SUSE support database, "The partitioning tool 'parted' which YaST uses during the installation may write an incorrect partition table." It goes on to describe details and a possible fix. However, the fix is a compressed file which seems to require a Linux native decompression utility. Since Linux was removed during the restore operation, I am unable to try and evaluate the fix. Much as I want Suse 9.1 Linux on my computer, I will not risk damaging my Windows installation until updated installation disks with correct drivers are available and have proven successful when used by others. Based on my experience, I would warn against buying this version if your Windows installation is important to you. Much as I liked what this distribution offered, I really need my Windows applications. I do not plan to reinstall this distribution and no longer have it.

An unbiased review, 2004-05-27 Most of these reviews I see here are very suspicious. Either 5 stars and you love it or 1 star and you hate it worse than the plague. Maybe Amazon can post your IP addresses again, and all will become clear.I have downloaded the LiveEval disk from SUSE, and have installed 9.1 on no less than 3 completely different systems from the same CD... they are: My home-built work system - abit IC7MB, 3.0 Ghz P4 w/ Hyperthreading, Seagate SATA HD, 2 EIDE HD's, CD/DVD reader, CD/DVD Writer, HP scanner, Sony monitor, USB mouse and keyboard, 3COM NIC, ATI Radeon 9800. My wife's Gateway My Compaq at work Each and every install performed flawlessly. I had no problems with any of the included software, and every piece of hardware on all systems was found and configured correctly with the following exceptions: Sound cards were not always recognized. However, after telling Yast to re-probe the hardware (one time) everything worked correctly. Also, still working on finding video drivers from ATI, however, you can download them free on ATI's web site. I was very pleased with the installer, KDE interface, the software included, and the overall experience of all of the installs. some more tips: 1) Like other reviewers here have said over and over again, do your homework BEFORE you try installing this. Make sure your hardware is supported, or if it's not, decide if this is something you would be willing to live with while running Linux. 2) Download and install the Live Eval disk from www.Suse.com - while this will not give you a 100% complete picture of how your system will function, it will give you enough information upon which you can base an informed decision. Remember: the live eval is free (and will not change your hard drive whatsoever). Your time/frustration/windows partitions are not free. 3) If at all possible, DON'T INSTALL LINUX IN THE SAME PARTITION AS WINDOWS!! If you like it enough, go out and buy a cheap 20GB hard drive, or at the very least create an empty FAT32 partiion on your hard drive before you attempt an install Linux.
