Much better than I expected., 2004-04-19
I was afraid to purchase the upgrade (from Q99), because of a bad experience upgrading a few years ago and because of the many negative reviews Q2004 has generated. I did it because I hadn't really found a better option (Reeally! and Portfolio Record Keeper just didn't have many of the features I was used to in Quicken). Quicken's 60 day money back return policy was enough to convince me to give it a try.

I consider myself a fairly proficient user, having used Quicken for 11+ years, although I have used Quicken primarily for investment tracking--not the banking and expense tracking features. Overall, the conversion went better than expected. I encourage everyone to take some time to back up the old version of Quicken data files and use the Custom install option to preserve the old version of the Quicken program. That way it is easy to hop back and forth between the old and new versions for easy data verification. At a minimum, run a couple of reports from the old version, so you are able to verify account balances just to be safe.

I did have a handful of items that appeared incorrect. I had the opportunity to use the Quicken Chat support. They are helpful (and free), for basic installation questions only. They will not handle any data issues at all and will refer you to their phone support. I decided to bite the bullet and call them (hoping desperately I wouldn't get charged), and when I explained that I had some discrepancies with my account balances right after converting, they spent more than a half an hour with me on the phone and didn't even ask for my credit card number. The issues really turned out to be reinitializing some reporting views that copied over from my old Quicken, as well as them providing clarification of how the new Quicken handles certain investment particulars. Bottom line: all of the data (my backup data file is 8 floppy disks!) transferred over without a hitch. The problems were all outside the data realm. I think they have actually improved their product support from what it was back when I tried (unsuccessfully) to upgrade to Q2001.

All in all I really do like the new Quicken. It offers much more in the way of reporting for investments than my old version did. I have not had any trouble running the program on my 3 year old machine. In fact, I have had Q2004, Q99 and AOL running at the same time and have not had a problem.

I did not give the product 5 stars, because I am not crazy about some of the new features--especially the way they changed to the dialog-type of entry for transactions in investment accounts. It seems like they want everyone to just use the downloads from their banks and brokerage firms which I prefer not to use. The new method of transaction entry will, unfortunately, be more time consuming. I'm not sure why they made this change. They also go a bit overboard with trying to provide the user with investment advice. I think they should just stick with providing a good product with good technical support and let us make our own financial decisions.

    Better than I thought, 2004-04-13
I was quite wary about Quicken 2004 when I read the reviews in regards to program stability and bugs. I had Quicken 2001 deluxe and just recently bought a Dell computer with Windows XP. I upgraded to Quicken 2004 Premier, I immediately checked for product updates, then imported my data and held my breath. Luckily my old quicken files imported without a hitch. So far no problems to report and it's been two months. No graphing issues or crashes. I like the interface it is much simpler especially for stock transactions. Now I do not do any real online banking or transactions other than stock quotes so I don't know how that is. I gave it fours stars instead of five for the marketing jazz that intermittently comes up. Overall I am satisfied with the product.

    QUICKEN 2004 PREMIER, 2004-03-13
I have used previous versions of Quicken (the latest 2000) and have always been very pleased. I was so pleased with version 2000 that I was reluctant to move to 2004 because I heard it could be cumbersome. Since I was notified by Intuit that they would no longer support version 2000, downloading quotes, etc. I felt that I needed to take the chance. I decided to go with Quicken Premier 2004 this time and am glad I did. Everything that I have wanted to do has been available and works very well.

    Excellent product....., 2004-03-08
The automatic download of your financial institution data to Quicken is a service provided by your bank, not Quicken. Don't blame Intuit if your bank/brokerage is not listed in the financial institution list.

I'm a former MS Money user, so I coudln't give you a review on Quicken2004 from an "upgrade" standpoint. Only a fresh install standpoint. I switched to Quicken because 2 of the four financial institutions I use did not support MS Money. Only Quicken.

Someone mentioned this program is a resource hog on their 1GHZ PentiumIII. This product runs perfectly fine on my 550Mhz P3 with 256MB of RAM.

I have yet to experience any bugs or major inconveniences with this product after 3 months of use, and I couldn't be happier with it. I've owned a few versions of Quicken in the past and found them to be riddled with bugs and this version is definately different in my opinion. For the first time in my life, my finances are finally 100% in order.

A Very Disappointed Loyal Quicken User of 10+ Years, 2004-03-06
I have been using Quicken for years and did not quite mind the little things. However, after upgrating to this 2004 'Premier' version, I am SO disappointed to discover SO MANY bugs.

Problem 1: My short sell and cover transactions show up with over 10K more gain under Return YTD than should be.

Problem 2: All my 2004 stock transactions show up as N/A under Return YTD although they clearly have gains under Gain/Loss. But if I changed the buy date from 2004 to 2003, then everything is calculated fine!

Problem 3: The nice cut/copy/paste fearture of investment transactions rifht from the transaction display was token away.

Problem 4: Transaction entry must be done via a separate window and it does not provide a feature to copy from another transaction which is almost identical.

Problem 5: Help window to submit bugs disappears each time you go back to Quicken to look up something so that you will need to write down all the info on paper and start all over again...
I use Quicken to primarily track my investment. This version added some nice feattures and a lot of fluff, but lacks quality and is much less efficient with investment tracking/viewing compared to 2002 version.
