    Not for old machines, 2006-09-24
I installed mac os 10.2 and it booted with no brightness. I'am using a apple wallstreet 250 MHZ. Every time I startup the screen is dim and I have to turn up the contrast. If I wake it up from sleep mode it won't let me adjust the brightness unless I reboot. A real big pain in the neck. I have been using OS 9 for 3 years now. I was planning on upgrading my memory and my hard drive. Then go to 10.2. I'am glad I tested it first before upgrading. That would be a waste of time and money. So it was a good lesson. Do not run Mac OS X on a old machine. Back to 9 I go.

Older iMacs can't do both OS X and 9, 2005-09-26
Some features of OS X 10.2 are definitely better, faster on OS X 10.2 than on OS 9.1, but there are several anomalies when interfacing with a Windows dominated world, more than with OS 9.1, such as setting up email (Outlook doesn't seem to work with OS X 10.2), scrolling the sddress book, etc.

The main problem is that on my iMac DV+ (bought late summer 2000), I can't run both Classic and OS X 10.2 - the OS X 10.2 install discs told me I had to do a complete memory wipe of all my Classic documents and applications (I bought an external hard drive to store these but can't start up on it). When I called Apple to see about options to run both Classic and OS X, the technician told me that they no longer supported the older iMac's and that help was $49/question!

    Substantial improvement, 2003-12-02
This is a very stable, incredibly smooth OS. It launches at lightning speed, is very intuitive and the learning curve is very short. If there is a downside, compatible professional graphic software is in short supply. It is a huge improvement over Windows and previous Mac OS.

Mac OS X does not disable built-in floppy drives. Mac OS X runs better on computers that are built for it. Running it on a Beige G3 is like running Windows on a 486; you can do it, but it doesn't mean you should. Crashes occour from poorly-designed APPLICATIONS, not OS X. I have had OS X for over a year, and I have had only 2 'kernel panics' (full system lockups). hbj200 is wrong about the 1%. it's more like 8% and growing rapidly, and everyone uses Windows because they believe Bill's propaganda. There is more documentation about digital cameras that networking in OS 10.2 because of Rendezvous (Stable, Efficient Networking for Dummies)

    This is awesome, 2003-10-16
The best Mac OS yet. I'm amazed each day at the capabilities of this operating system. I haven't had to restart in nearly 5 months! This IS the smoothest, best looking, best running operating system I have EVER used!
