Age of Empires 2 is cool, 2007-01-09 My husband and kids love this game. They would play it for four or five hours a day if I would let them. They have hooked three computers together and play it whenever they get a chance. They have Age of Empires 1, and they think this one is way cooler. I'm impressed that they can connect the scenarios to their history lessons and learn some geography along the way, too.

Still the best RTS of all time, 2007-01-08 Since the trend to using 3d-engines for RTS games all the developers seem to be investing all their energy in the graphics and forgetting that they need to pay attention to the game. AOE2 may not have the hottest graphics, but it's still the best for gameplay, balance, stategy and tactics. It's such a finely balanced game that it maintains its appeal long after newer games are gathering dust on the shelf.

Should You Buy This I Guarantee You Will Enjoy It, 2006-12-02 I have a funny story that goes along with this game. You see, the regular Age of Kings edition of this game (without the Expansion which is SO much better and/or easier) was a birthday present for me. However, someone else got me the Gold Edition that came with the Expansion, and I got really happy. The bad news is I can't play multiplayer anymore because I lost one of the AOK cds. But that's another story.
The basic guide comes with the cd, but it doesn't really say the REAL basic things like "How do you make guys move" and "How do you make a building/unit/research". I think they leave that for the Learn to Play Campaign. To learn what I'm going to tell you, I watched the Celtic guy drone about how to move. I'm going to save you that by telling you how you do this.
Choose/move unit: Left click on the unit you want to move or use. To move it, or make it attack, work, heal, or repair something right click the place or thing. To choose many units of the same kind double click on one, to choose many units of different kinds drag mouse across the area of units. Can only have up to 50 units controlled at the same time.
Build a building: Choose a villager(s). You will see a commands menu in the bottom left hand corner of the screen with three signs, all with hammers. To build a military building click on the hammer-square that also has a sword, then click the building wanted, then place it where you want it to be. For an economic building press the hammer-square on the far left, next to the military building sign. To repair press the hammer-square with a masonry background.
Create a unit: Click on the building that makes the unit. In the bottom left menu you will see pictures of what units the building creates. Sometimes there will be a technology or an upgrade there (see Researching Upgrades and Technologies). Anyhow, click on the the unit you want created, and it will start creating. It takes different units different speeds to be created (see Buildings, Units and Upgrades). When created the unit will appear outside the building that made it. With certain technologies a unit can be made at more than one building.
Researching Technologies and Upgrades: To research an upgrade go to the building that makes the unit and press the button below it which will be the upgrade. I'll have a picture of the king of weapon it uses, or something to do with it, and if you scroll over like everything else it will tell you what it is and what it does (must have "Help" on for this). To research a technology, go to the building that has the technology and click on the technology which will be like every other production in the bottom left menu. It will start researching.
Houses: Yes an entire section on houses, which are very important buildings located in the villager's building menu in the Economic Buildings section. Houses keep up the unit availibility. If you don't have enough houses you're units will stop creating till you get new ones, and the population marking area will flash yellow.
Resources: Like they did in the Middle Ages, you must have resources (chiefly food and gold) to make units and buildings. Their are several ways of getting food. You may build farms (in the economic buildings section), dig in berry bushes (use villager to do so) hunt deer and boar (boar attacks you) (use villagers to do so), herd sheep or turkey depending on your climate (use villager to do so), fish (use villager or fishing ship to do so), build a fish trap (use fishing ship to do so) or buy at the market. Gold you may get by mining in gold mines (use villager to do so), trade for resources (use trade cart/cog and ally's market/dock to do so), or get a relic (use monk to do so; to get relic locate it than use monk to get it and drop it off at the monastery. Getting all relics and holding them for certain time period means you win). To get wood, chop down trees, and to get stone mine for it in stone mines. Basically, you must use villagers for most of the work.
Civilization Archive--
AZTECS (new)--Specialize in infantry, monks. Unique unit: Jaguar Warrior (dressy infantry). No horses, start with eagle warrior.
BRITONS--Specialize in foot archers. Unique unit: Longbowmen (long range, powerful archer).
BYZANTINES--Specialize in defense. Unique unit: Cataphract (heavily armored knight). Has every military technology and upgrade, lacks strength in buildings.
CELTS--Specialize in infantry and siege engines. Unique unit: Woad Raider (speedy infantry). Good offense, try not to get into situations when you are besieged.
CHINESE--Specialize in archers. Unique unit: Chu Ko Nu (fast firing archer). Try to use wall superiority.
FRANKS--Cavalry civilization. Unique unit: Throwing Axeman (just what it sounds like. Not very powerful). Make as many knights as possible, then upgrade them ASAP.
GOTHS--Infantry civilization. Unique unit: Huskarl (archer-proof infantry). Make as many infantry units as you can.
HUNS (new)--Cavalry civilization. Unique unit: Tarkan (cavalry with bonus againt buildings). Do not need houses.
JAPANESE--Infantry and naval civilization. Unique unit: Samurai (fast attacking infantry). Make usage of navy quickly.
KOREANS (new)-- Naval civilization. Unique units: Turtle ship (slow yet sufficient cannon ship), war wagon (missile firing siege weapon). Take care to build towers.
MAYANS (new)--Archer civilization. Unique unit: Plumed archer (highly armored, fast and weak attacking archer). Make an economic empire.
MONGOLS--Cavalry archer and siege engine civilization. Unique unit: Mangudai (Long range cavalry archer). Also use Light Cavalry.
PERSIANS--Cavalry civilization. Unique unit: War elephant (slow powerful and hard to destroy cavalry with literal name). Do not use the infantry. It's useless.
SARACENS--Camel civilization. Unique unit: Mameluke (ranged camel). Raid, do not attack with umph.
SPANISH (new)--Gunpowder and monk civilization. Unique units: Conquistador (mounted hand cannoneer), Missionary (mounted monk). Take to conquistadors like heck.
TEUTONS--Offensive civilization. Unique unit: Teutonic Knight (slow yet VERY powerful infantry). Teutonic Knights are the best infantry, so I'd recommend great usage of them.
TURKS--Gunpowder civilization. Unique unit: Jannisary (more powerful hand cannoneer). Use not only every gunpowder building and unit, but also cavalry archers.
VIKINGS--Infantry and naval civilization. Unique units: Longboat (Fast warship), berserk (infantry that slowly regenerates health). Sail a lot.
This game has great graphics, and it deserves a GREAT round of applause for being the funnest computer game I've ever played.
