Still Entertaining After All These Years, 2006-05-06
I've always been a sucker for Submarine Movies, and as a kid, this one really captured my imagination. The Nautilus is rendered here with amazing, gothic detail. The film also has a great story and themes, and some fine performances, and underwater action. I recently watched it again with my own kids. I was a little concerned that with today's rapid fire non-stop action kiddie movies, they would be bored by it. In fact, they were quite entertained by it and watched the squid sequence over several times. I also still found it very entertaining. As far as the extras go, don't miss the original "Sunset Squid" sequence which was scrapped in favor of the one which was used in the film. It is hilariously bad: you can see the wires on the tentacles. A smart decision to drop this one. The short documentary on the real Humboldt squid is also worth a look.

(1895-1971) and Peter Lorre (1904-1964) stars as shipwrecked survivors taken captive by the mysterious Captain Nemo , brillioantly portrayed by James Mason (1909-1984) . Wavering between genious and madness , Nemo has lauched a deadly crusade across the seven seans . But can the captive crew expose this evil plan before he destroy the world. Walter Disney (1901-1966) brilliant Award-winning adaptation of Jules Verne (1828-1905) gripping tale makes 20.000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA a truly mesmerising masterpiece . Superb High Quality transfer . Recommended

    20000 leagues is a masterpiece, 2006-03-24
In my opinion this movie and the Swiss Family Robinson are the two classic disney adventure movies that hit homeruns when they were initially released, and still to this day continue to "wow" audiences that watch it on the small screen.

The story is not original but is rather based on a book by the master story teller Jules Verne. His imagination is off the charts as he wrote the book this movie is based on as well as several other sci-fi movies (Journey to the center of the earth).

The movie was a big time production as evidence by the documentries found in the 2 disc set. In this DVD you get documentries about the story, the making of the movie, the actors, and even how it was publisized.

The cast was "A" list only headlined by Kirk Douglas, who was perfect for his role as the Whaler. I love the scenery and the submarine. The music was great and I still find myself singing Kirk Douglas song "Got a whale of a tale" even as I type this review.

Their is a good message from the story that is brought out very well by the movie. I would think in Disney fan or classic movie fan, or adventure movie fan would want to add this film to their collection.

    Great Family Movie, 2006-03-23
I saw this when I was a child. It was fun to share it with my young boys after so many years. They loved it. Kirk Douglas was a "hoot"!

DISNEY CLASSIC & STILL AN AMAZING ADVENTURE, 2006-02-21
Even with today's vast array of special effects and CGI computer generated gimmicks, Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea," is still able to hold the viewer's attention throughout. Kirk Douglas plays a sea faring whale harpoonist who is hired on a military ship, during the turn of the century, to help find and destroy a fabled sea monster that is destroying ships at sea. Also aboard the ship are a famed French professor and his assistant, played by Peter Lorre. They've been invited along to help rule out the existence of the sea monster to the press. When the supposed sea monster destroys a nearby ship, the military ship begins firing upon the monster. Soon we discover that the monster is no monster at all, when it strikes the military ship and overthrows Kirk Douglas, the professor, and Peter Lorre. They discover the monster is actually a vast underwater submarine and is captained by an eccentric man that has forsaken the land for the sea.

I remember first watching this, as a kid, on the Wonderful World of Disney during the mid to late `70's, and was captivated by the underwater scenery, the battle with the sea squid, and the explosion of the island as the grand finale. This dvd special edition is a great treat for fans of Disney cinema. I only wish that such care would be taken with all of their films. I highly recommend this movie, as well as another Disney adventure in the same vane as this, "Island at the Top of the World." If only the Disney studios were still churning out movies like these, and others, that were featured on the Wonderful World of Disney. What a shame that the once wonderful world of Disney has became a "re-make of a re-make" studio that has lost it's imagination and creativity.
