    Black Ice, 2002-05-09
Well if you like being asked if it is okay for Internet Explorer and Explorer in general can run every few minutes - this is the program for you. As for me it seems like these are programs that should not even be questioned. I upgraded from the old version to the new version, and trust me the old version was nice, but the new version is absolutely terrible. I'd kill for the old version. I'm switching to Norton firewall as soon as it arrives. My printer will now not print and I think this may be why. when I went on their troubleshooting site, there were all kinds of "yea we are aware of the problem, this is the work around", and you had to change various ini files, or whatever. I want a program that works not that I have to fix. I have it set on low to medium security, but be real the only thing left is to let ANYONE in. Go figure!!!

I purchased a copy of Black Ice, on my friend's recommendation. I am extremely pleased with its operation. It provides effective knowledge of who is trying to mess with my system and it effectively blocks their access.

My friend also suggested that I upgrade to 3.5cbf which acts as Tripwire (for Linux). It keeps track of valid programs and warns users when any other program appears on the scene. I downloaded the upgrade without incident after providing my SW license.

Like the other reviewer, I also connect through a modem, but even at that people are out there trying to hack my computer. Because of BI, I know and they can't get in.

    XP Not Compatible, 2002-01-07
Black Ice performed fine for me under Windows 98, but with graduation to Windows XP, I experienced frequent crashes. Microsoft alluded to Black Ice as the problem and suggested that I update to Version 3.0 or better. Unfortunately, as of this writing, there is no V. 3.0 for Black Ice.

A switch to the Norton firewall has yielded greatly increased stability.

The following error analysis was received from Microsoft on 2/19/02:
"BlackIce defender version 2.9 or earlier is installed on your machine. BlackIce Defender version 2.9 and earlier are known to cause this crash. Please contact Internet Security Systems ...to get an updated driver (3.0 or later) that should correct this problem.

This event report has been processed and analyzed. We determined that this crash event was caused by the following module:
    BlackDrv.sys

This module was produced by Network ICEĀ® Corporation. For more information, contact Network ICEĀ® Corporation"

You must be using a different product/version., 2002-01-06
I had to respond. One of the previous reviews is incorrect. It states "but if you get a more involved probe, like a SubSeven probe, BlackIce Defender doesn't block it. Instead, it lets the probe happen, then tells you that someone was looking for something but couldn't find it." That's not true. If you set BlackIce to "Cautious" or above, it does it's job and blocks just fine. If you leave the protection level set for "Trusting", you're going to manually have to do what BlackIce does quite nicely automatically. If you don't like all the blinking notices it gives while it's running, just exit the client piece, the daemon still runs and does it's job.
