 This was pretty fun, 2003-04-07
This is a really fun game. It is not half as fun as its predecesor Starcraft. I thought the campaigns were a little too easy, and that the whole game was a piece of cake. This is one of the better games I've played so I gave it 4 stars.
 An all-time classic., 2003-03-03
This is an old game, and it continues to entertain me for hours. Sometimes its age shows, with poor pathfinding (when you try to send units across the map, they can get stuck in trees), and with basically one race (orc and human are pretty much the same, only orc is better). However, none of these shortcomings matter, because the gameplay is better than any other game I've played, even if there is only one race and a lack of conveniences like rally points and such.I'm probably making a lot of people not want to get this game with this review, or more likely no one cares about this review, but I'll just reassert that the multiplayer in this game brings me the most enjoyment I've ever had when it comes to video games.

One of the greatest games ever invented for computers..., 2003-01-26
I rate WarCraft II the greatest strategy game ever produced for the computer even to this day. I first discovered it in late 1995 (or 1996) on the servers at Uni, where groups of "clans" would have huge WarCraft battles against each other for much of the day. Yes, nerdy, but the amount of people that stumbled onto this game and made it a huge obsession was incredible.The thing that makes the game so good is that in these current times, eye candy aside, the gameplay is incredible. The grpahics are still great and guarantee the game won't run slowly or be digressed by superficial videos etc. Besides, since when would you complain about Chess not having great graphics - it's the PLAY that counts. The pieces are so perfectly matched (or maybe because some aren't) that forces the constant pressure of various moves and strategies to stay afloat. This is not the game that can ever be mastered and won easily - the only thing this game guarantees is total immersion and escapism. I've bought WarCraft III and although it's an amazing piece of software, it just doesn't have the same captivation and basic yet totally captivating gameplay that WarCraft II does. I cannot recommend buying it highly enough...

Awesome, 2003-01-07
WarCraft II isn't exactly the freshest real-time strategy game on the market, but that doesn't mean it's any less fun than it used to be. For those of you who missed it the first time around, WarCraft II is set in a fantasy realm where knights hack at trolls with swords, deadly spells crisscross the battlefield, and powerful fortresses dot the landscape. The game pits the evil orcs against the humans, letting players choose whichever side they want in a series of battles over the world. With the WarCraft II: Battle Chest, players can experience the magic of the original game along with the added enhancements of the Beyond the Dark Portal expansion pack. Rounding out the Battle Chest is a complete strategy guide that will walk beginners through the basics and provide more experienced players with advanced tactics so they can master the game. That's good, because players will need all the help they can get challenging other WarCraft II fans online. It's possible to challenge one to eight other players on the developer's free Battle.net servers, while more solitary gamers can immerse themselves in one of the fun single-player campaigns or stand-alone missions. WarCraft II's finely balanced gameplay has lost none of its charm, even if the graphics are aging. In most missions you start with a small force and must gather enough resources to build a strong base of operations that can field a formidable army.

An old classic which is still playable even now., 2002-12-14
I first played warcraft 2 four years ago, and found it to be one of the most engrossing and enjoyable RTS games, alongside Age of Empires.While it seems dated now, it is also extremely playable, and at times even challenging. The expansion levels are good, although sometimes it blows if your hero character dies, because then you suffer an automatic defeat. Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often to me, since I keep my heroes well back from the action. Collecting gold and improving your units is still as enjoyable as ever, and there are a number of ways in which you can attack an enemies base: contrary to some views, Warcraft 2 is NOT simply a "rush-attack" game. SOME of the levels in the original game can be defeated using the rush strategy, but the expansion levels are harder, and you have to try different tactics. Basically, I found the expansion levels to be very similar to playing the custom scenarios, in that the enemy attacks more, has multiple bases, and can usually only be effectively stopped by building a series of Guard Towers and Cannon Towers to protect your base. I have no hesitation in giving this game five stars. If you're the type of person who likes both action and strategy, then buy this.
