Pioneers of Alternative Rock / Great Album, 2004-04-02 REM truly are the pioneers of alternative music this album came out in 1987 at time when hair metal bands ruled the airwaves. It brought something creative and different than the usual sex innuendo songs on the radio. It is a very political conscious album. The whole CD rocks with stand out tracks like the classic End of the World ( I feel fine). Welcome to the Occupation, Finest Worksong, The One I Love which is one of my fave songs of all time. The whole CD is appealing and essential to anyone who grew up in 80's college radio. This album somewhat brought them into the mainstream but not in a bad way. In my opinion their best album.

Pioneers of Alternative Rock/ Great Album, 2004-04-01 REM without a doubt set a standard for Alternative music. They were Indie before it was hip to be. This album is their best work in my opinion this CD is essential for fans of true college garage rock music. This record came out in 1987 when hair metal bands ruled the airwaves. This album was something different & unique from the usual sex innuendo songs on the radio at that time very political concious. The whole CD rocks with stand out tracks like the classic It's End of the World ( I feel Fine) showing their early punk influence. The melodic and my personal favorite song on CD "The one I Love". Finest Worksong is a great opener & catchy tune. This is the album that broke them somewhat into the forefront mainstream. "Welcome to the Occupation" very of the tongue song w/ catchy hook. This CD a must have for anyone who grew up in the 80's with college radio.

A five-star effort and result., 2004-03-14 There're lots of good albums out there, but there's a big gap between good and great... something almost unexplainable. It's like going from one world to another. That's what great music is all about... altering consciousness. Document is truly something that absorbs the listener, plain and simple.Document's hit singles, "It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I feel fine)" and "The One I Love", are more than just radio staples... they're pleasant reminders of the excellent poets of the last few centuries. The same can be said for "Finest Worksong", "Fireplace", and so many others. It's lyrical music, with a new wave touch. The political songs, "Welcome to the Occupation", "Exhuming McCarthy", and "Disturbance at the Heron House", are the greatest trio of government-related tracks on any rock record ever. A southern touch, a clip of former senator Joe McCarthy (one that's quite revealing, actually), and soothing figurativism... it's subtle, charming, and ultimately powerful. Document is proof that R.E.M. was ready to go from indie to mainstream and continue maintaining artistic capability and credibility. It will not, and can not, be forgotten.
The Best REM Has to Offer, 2004-02-28 This is my favorite REM album. It is one of the few cds in my collection I can put on at any time and enjoy no matter what mood I'm in. It ranks right up with 'Automatic' as REM's best (Life's Rich Pageant isn't too far behind). This is a must have for anyone who is an REM fan - and a good place to start if you want an introduction to their pre-Monster ouvre. A classic.
Really not so good album, 2004-01-01 This is typical pre-grand success REM album: full of mediocre songs. Only two hit songs are great (It is the end of the world as we know it and The one I love). Although I am big REM fan I wonder how people here can give five stars to this album. There are so much better album from the band, IMHO Up is their best album without any mediocre songs. And Document is fine too.
