The Album That Made REM, 2004-08-22
While REM had had 4 previous albums w/ underground hits like radio free europe and driver 8, it was not until document that they finally broke through and got a radio hit w/ the one i love. the band's last indie album, it was their 1st 2 gain widespread popularity because of the top 20 hit status of the sarcastic and often misunderstood the one i love and the rapid fire political its the end of the world as we know it. this album shows the greatness that was in store 4 yrs 2 come. if you aren't overly famililar w/ the indie REM music (except 4 the 2 hits from this CD), but like more modern REM, this is a good place 2 start, as 2 see what the band was like in its early days

THIS ALBUM IS A BONAFIDE CLASSIC. THIS WAS THE BREAKTHROUGH ALBUM FOR R.E.M. AND THIS IS A ROCK CLASSIC! IN WHAT MAY BE ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS TO COME FROM THE 1980S, R.E.M. DELIVER 11 CLASSIC SONGS AND THEY ALL RULE!! THE BEST TRACKS ARE ''STRANGE'', ''FINEST WORKSONG'', ''EXHUMING MCARTHY'', ''WELCOME TO THE OCCUPATION'', AND OF COURSE, ''IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT AND I FEEL FINE''. THIS IS A MUST-HAVE ALBUM FOR ANY ROCK FAN. I DON'T CARE IF YOU ONLY LIKE THE HARD ROCK, THIS SHOULD SATISFY YOU. A DEFINITE GEM.

    Excellent!, 2004-07-30
Good group. Saw them in St Paul in the early 90's. It's a good show. They are a nice alternative to commercial rock..and they remain fresh today. :)

    The Problem with R.E.M., 2004-04-26
No, I am not going to bash R.E.M. Far from it! It's just that while I definitely would rank Automatic for the People as my favorite R.E.M. album, I constantly vacillate when it comes to number two. In one review I said it was Out of Time; here I'm going to say it's Document, with Out of Time slipping to #3. R.E.M. has put out several strong albums and it's really hard to be able to do a 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. ranking of the top several. That's the problem with R.E.M.!

When you listen to Document, each song elicits a different reaction: I'm calmed by Finest Worksong, I can't help but ruminate when I hear Welcome to the Occupation, I revel in It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I feel Fine), and I savor Oddfellows Local 151 as if it's fine wine. This is a powerful album -- though not as emotionally as Automatic for the People is. No, this one is powerful on more of an intellectual level, though it still has a definite emotional payoff.

This album is "The One I Love"., 2004-04-06
This was my first "R.E.M." album, which makes sense since it was the first of theirs to reach the ears of the masses. "Out Of Time" was actually when they really became huge, but this one got the name out. The big songs here are "The One I Love" and "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)", but "Finest Worksong" was a minor hit too. However I enjoy "Exhuming McCarthy", "Fireplace", and others just as much. Their next album "Green" is also very good, and if you want a sampling of their early years, including this album, check out "Eponymous".
