A MAGNIFICENT PIECE OF ART, 1998-08-06 AS THEIR LAST RECORDING FROM I.R.S. BEFORE JUMPING TO WARNER BROS, THIS ALBUM IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE. THEIR SONG "ITS THE END OF THE WORLD..." IS ONE OF MY BEST SONGS DUE TO THE SIMPLE QUALITY OF THE GROUP. I HIGHER RECOMEND IT FOR ALL LISTENERS AND SPECIALLY FOR R.E.M. LOVERS AS ME.
Original sounds but a few low points exist throughout the CD, 1998-07-29 I've had the priviledge of owning Document since its release in the fall of 1987. Even now, nearly 11 years later, I catch myself listening to the CD in awe at the original sounds the boys from Athens created for Document. I find it extremely difficult to compare tracks like Finest Worksong and Exhuming McCarthy to the anything recorded before or since 1987. Unlike other reviews you will read on this page, I believe Document is an excellent purchase for those who are looking for a taste of R.E.M. Certainly, CD's such as Murmur and Automatic For the People are exceptional works of art, but Document provides a taste of the band's sound which is a little more refined than their earliest work, but is much different than the R.E.M. songs you may have heard through radio play over the past 9 years.
Strong Set From R.E.M., 1998-07-24 This album has some of R.E.M.'s greatest music. It is brilliant up through "The One I Love," then falls down a bit on the last few selections, such as the boring "Lightning Hopkins." Still, a very worthy collection from one of the modern rock era's most influential bands. This was their last release on I.R.S. records before they made the big jump to Warner Brothers.
A solid REM album, but nothing ground breaking, 1998-07-22 "Document" was the 3rd REM album I purchased after the wonderful "Out of Time" and just outstanding "Automatic for the People". While "Document" does have it's upsides and 4 great tracks, the majority of the album is ho hum and nothing compared to "Automatic for the People" or "Murmur". Easily the most popular song off the CD has to be It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine). Catchy and incredibly hard to memorize the words to the song does grow tiring after a while. After that the other great songs are The One I Love, Finest Worksong, and Disturbance At The Heroin House. The One I Love is wonderful, but if you have never heard the live version of the song off REM's "Essential REM - REM In The Attic" Album then you have no idea just how beautiful that song can be. While a good purchase for REM fans, new REM fans may want to look into "Automatic for the People" or &quo! t;Murmur" first to get started, both of those albums are better than anything else REM has to offer, including this.
