Good for the price: lots of material covered, but some weaknesses, 2006-03-14 So far in my Chinese studies, I've used Pimsleur, New Practical Chinese Reader, Learn in Your Car, and Instant Immersion. The closest comparison to Instant Immersion is Learn in Your Car as they are both listen-and-repeat courses.
The strength of Instant Immersion is clearly the breadth of material covered for a very low price. The pronunciation practice, especially regarding the tones, is also very helpful. The biggest weakness is a lack of a transcript, which would be very helpful for learning the pronunciation of the characters and reviewing and clarifying what you hear in the audio. Also, I find the female Chinese speaker's voice to be grating.
Learn in Your Car has a beautiful transcript with different colors for new words and both the pinyin pronunciation and Chinese characters for each phrase. Its main disadvantage versus Instant Immersion is that they have only released Level I so far, so it does not cover the breadth of material that Instant Immersion does.
