Not quite ready for serious work..., 2007-10-23 DiskStudio is not quite ready for serious work...
Why you ask? Because there is a good chance DiskStudio will not work as promised and leave you with no option but to reinstall all of your data.
I bought this to let me repartition my hard drive and use the second partition to try Linux on my iBook. Following directions, I made two 20GB partitions on the 40GB hard drive on my iBook. Mac OS X worked fine on the Mac partition, and the other half was left blank, ready to install Linux.
After I tried Linux on my iBook for a while, I decided to remove it and return my iBook's hard drive to a single 40GB size. That is where DiskStudio falls short. I could not get the application to work properly and return my laptop's hard drive to its original state.
I consulted technical support but could not return the hard drive to a single partition. I had to completely wipe the hard drive and reformat to a single partition. I reinstalled Mac OS X and all of my applications and data. Something which would be time-consuming (and/or costly) if I had tried this utility on my primary computer, my G5 PowerMac.
Luckily for me, my iBook is my back-up computer and never has any critical data or files.
I was disappointed with the results I got from DiskStudio, especially since I have always been very happy with TechToolPro, which is also produced by Micromat.
Since the application is new, I am willing to give Micromat the benefit of the doubt and hope they improve thing in a subsequent release. But I would not recommend this product on a primary work computer (with important data).
Feel free to try it on a second or a project computer, knowing you might have to wipe the hard drive if you cannot get it to properly work for you. Otherwise look elsewhere for a non-destructive repartitioning utility.
