The Windows Firewall protects your data from unauthorized inbound and outbound access.
|Category||Security & Encryption|
The Windows Firewall is an advanced network security system provided by Microsoft. This system prevents unauthorized inbound as well as outbound network access, thus keeping your data and intellectual property safe from external threats. In addition to providing security on inbound access, the program also restricts the sharing and distribution of your data via outbound sources.
Since the application is a part of the Windows Operating System package, it has no additional hardware, software or system requirements, thus making it an easy choice. This is one of the primary reasons that the Windows Firewall, despite being only an average player in comparison to the security offered by other firewalls, remains a popular and natural choice.
Initially known as the Internet Connection Firewall, the program first made an appearance in October 2001 with the shipping of the first Windows XP product. Then, due to serious attacks from worms such as the Blaster worm and Sasser worm, Microsoft was forced to upgrade the network security component of its Windows Operating System products, and thus, the Windows Firewall was born.
This upgraded version of the firewall first made an appearance in 2004 with the Windows XP Service Pack 2. Now, the latest in line is known as the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
Three Different Profiles Offering Separate Tiers of Security
The Windows Firewall offers users the choice between three different profiles – Public Profile, Private Profile and Domain Profile.
The Public Profile is the one with the most restrictions, as it assumes that the user network is an open one, thereby exposing it to the threats that exist on the internet.
The Private Profile has lesser restrictions, and it assumes that the network is not connected to the internet. This profile is required to be activated by the administrator of the computer or network.
The Domain Profile is the least restrictive one, as it allows free sharing of files assuming that the computer is accessed only by trusted computers on the network.
All these profiles work on different security parameters and can be configured easily by the user in line with the security requirements. Irrespective of the profile, the security log enables users to keep a track of the computer’s activities.
